Szczesny: Arsenal must finish above Spurs

Wojceich Szczesny said that the “main target” for the Gunners this season is to finish above Tottenham. Arsenal should be aiming much higher than finishing above Spurs, which is something we’ve accomplished every year since 1995.

Spurs are currently five points ahead of us, though they have played one less match. Following the loss to Manchester City on Sunday, Szczesny said that the new goal is to finish ahead of Tottenham:

“Getting above Tottenham is the main target. We don’t want to finish below them no matter what. That’s just my personal ambition because I am one of the fans and so it means a lot to me to finish above them. I am confident we will do so.

“They will slip up eventually. They have been in good form – you have to give it to them – but I am confident we are a better side and will finish above them. Time will tell if they can handle the pressure but they look good at the moment. Hopefully they will drop points in the second half of the season.” (Source: Evening Standard)

Has it really come to this? Are we so rubbish that finishing above Spurs is the main target? What if they end up in 6th and we finish the season in 5th? Is that the definition of success this season?

Hopefully, this is only Szczesny’s wish for the campaign and not the rest of the squad. It would be a disaster if Tottenham are above us at the end of the season, but surely the goal is to secure a top four spot. Of course, the overall target of the club going forward is to compete for major trophies, but, given the way the season started, that can’t be expected this year.

Harry Redknapp’s side are having a terrific season by their low standards, although it is only a matter of time until Emmanuel Adebayor destroys the dressing room. He always starts well with his new club, then he becomes a nuisance. If somehow Spurs do finish above us this season, we can expect the DVD release of the decade from them.

Enough about Spurs. They are the ones usually obsessed by finishing above us, not the other way around. I know Szczesny means well, but his comments are sickening to many Gooners, including me.

Wilshere: I’ll stay at Arsenal forever

Jack Wilshere promised that he will never leave the Emirates Stadium. He also targeted mid-December for his return to training. In other news, Szczesny would put money on Arsenal grabbing the league title, and the keeper is also embracing a leadership role.

Jack Wilshere

As we all know, our promising 19-year old English midfielder has yet to play this season. His recovery has been slow and delayed. Wilshere told iFilm London: “It’s going really slow at the minute and obviously I’m really frustrated. I should be back in training by mid-December, then I can crack on and it’s up to the boss when he picks me.”

Wilshere’s return has not been on my mind as much now that we are starting to win games, but he is still a massively important player. When he comes back, Arsene Wenger will have more options in the centre of the midfield.

When asked whether he would promise to stay at Arsenal “forever,” Jack replied: “I promise that, yeah. I’ve been at the club since I was nine and learned to love it.

“From the [Patrick] Vieira days, to [Dennis] Bergkamp, [Cesc] Fabregas, I’ve watched them come through and move on. There’s a crop of new players, [Aaron] Ramsey, myself, Kieran Gibbs…hopefully we can really create something special.

“I love the club and I want to be part of its future.”

With all the transfer drama of recent years, this has to warm your heart as a Gooner. Jack really wants to be an Arsenal player, and we supporters only want players who want to pull on the red and white shirt. It won’t be too long before Wilshere is the captain of our club.

Wojceich Szczesny

The leadership problem in the squad is dissolving in part because of Wojceich Szczesny. The Polish keeper is vocal and also seems to be quite a character in the dressing room. Szczesny, despite his young age, is not afraid to direct his teammates on the pitch (from the Daily Mail):

“For me it really doesn’t matter if my defence are older than me or more experienced than me, it doesn’t make any difference. My job is to get them organised and their job is to listen to me – so I’m very comfortable doing that.”

Szczesny has the confidence of Nicklas Bendtner and the skill of a top quality keeper. He also knows how to tell jokes. When asked about some of the recent dribbling risks he has taken, Wojciech said:

“That’s why they called me the young Zinedine when I was five years old! You could see that from that I’d like to have been an outfield player.”

Clearly, Szczesny speaks his mind at every possible opportunity. He told Arsenal.com about the chances of Arsenal winning the Premier League this season: “I’d put a tenner on it!. I completely believe in this Club and if we win every single game like we have been recently then why not?

“Obviously the mood has turned around and so has the belief. We believe that we can win every single game and if we can do that we are confident. I think it’s all about the spirit in the team now. There’s obviously been a few good results and we’ve got our confidence back.”

The character and spirit of this Arsenal side is different than in recent years. Maybe it is because we finally have a real captain in Robin van Persie. The new signings could have brought about a change in the dressing room. I wouldn’t bet on us winning the league, but this team could accomplish something special.

Media warp Szczesny comments

Wojceich Szczesny answered several questions after Arsenal’s loss in the North London derby. His answers were fairly tame and uncontroversial, but that did not stop the media from twisting his words to make an interesting headline. Interesting headlines at best, stonewall lies at worst.

A headline on the ESPN: “Szczesny: We’re better than Spurs.” The headline and article gave you the impression that Szczesny rushed to them to proclaim that the Gunners are still the best team in North London despite the loss. Here is what Szczesny really said (from ESPN):

“You can’t make such a statement after a couple of months after our poor start to the season or after just one game. I think Spurs are a great club and they have shown today that they can play really good football, but are they better than Arsenal? I don’t really think so.”

Judging by his answer, Szczesny was asked the obvious question about a possible power shift from Arsenal to Tottenham. Yet the media want you to think that he went out of his way to make the comments. What else is Szczesny going to say? He plays for Arsenal, so he is not ready to admit ultimate defeat in the battle against Spurs.

The Sun are not only good at manipulating photos. They also manipulate quotes. Their headline: “Szczesny: I want to be Arsenal captain, not Van Persie.” Szczesny never mentioned Robin van Persie (from The Sun):

“I feel that when I say something, everyone listens to me. More so on the field than in the dressing room, but that’s more important, I think. I want to be captain of the team. I feel I am able to take on that responsibility.”

According to The Sun’s Darren Lewis, Szczesny added “fresh controversy” to the club. No, Darren Lewis has added the controversy. Many, if not all, footballers aspire to be the captain and leader of their team. The problem with Arsenal in recent years has been a lack of leadership. I would like a team full of captains.

When there is no leadership on the pitch, the writers and pundits call for more vocal leaders. When a leader like Szczesny is vocal, the writers and pundits say there is turmoil over who should wear the armband. There is no way Arsenal or Szczesny can win in the media.

ESPN also ran a story titled: “Arsenal’s Szczesny tempted by Barcelona.” Right away, I knew this was going to be a bias-filled rumourfest. The media love kicking a club when they are down. Anyway, this is what Szczesny said (from ESPN):

“I can’t declare that I will spend my entire career here, but if I leave I will have a very important reason or I will go to Barcelona. I can’t imagine a situation where I would leave this club just for money.”

Alarm bells went off when he mentioned Barcelona, but then I came to my senses. All players in world football want to play for Barcelona right now. Also, it is unrealistic to expect Barcelona to go after Szczesny. The media love to speculate about the next Gunner to leave.

Udinese 1-2 Arsenal: Gunners advance in Champions League

Arsenal advanced to the Champions League group stage by defeating Udinese 2-1 on Wednesday night in Italy. Wojceich Szczesny’s penalty save kept the momentum of the match with the Gunners. Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott chipped in with the Arsenal goals, while Antonio Di Natale provided Udinese’s only tally of the match.

The key moment of the game came after the referee handed Udinese a penalty in the 58th minute. The score was 1-1, and Udinese needed two more goals to advance to the Champions League group stage. Antonio Di Natale was the obvious choice to take the penalty. The Udinese captain struck the ball hard but Wojciech Szczesny made a brilliant, stretching save and the ball popped over the bar.

Udinese would have fancied their chances of advancing had Di Natale converted the penalty. It was not a terrible strike from the Italian striker, but Szczesny made a strong, confident block. The shot had tremoundous power behind it, but the Polish keeper denied Udinese the opportunity. The Italian side looked dejected after the penalty, while Arsenal were uplifted by the great stop.

Di Natale opened the scoring for Udinese in 39th minute. The 33-year old put a majestic header into the Arsenal net. The ball floated towards the far corner and popped off the post before settling in the goal mouth. Di Natale had been unlucky early in the match when he had a goal disallowed and also hit the post.

At halftime, Arsene Wenger’s team had a very real chance of dropping into the Europa League. They were down 1-0 at the Stadio Fruili, and the home fans were raising the volume.

Robin van Persie scored the Arsenal equaliser in the 55th minute. Gervinho, who was terrific all night, sent a drive across the box and RVP tapped it in. It was a real potcher’s goal for the Dutchman, and the pressure shifted back to Udinese.

Only a few minutes after the Arsenal goal, Udinese were awarded the penalty for an apparent Vermaelen handball. It was a harsh ruling from the official. The ball did appear to hit Thomas Vermaelen’s hand, but his arm was by his side. Szczesny made the aforementioned save, so no one will debate the legitimacy of the call.

Theo Walcott extended the lead in the 69th minute. Bacary Sagna, who had an excellent game, sprung Walcott foward, and Theo used his speed to create a one-on-one with the keeper. Walcott fired the ball near post, and the shot got by the talented Udinese keeper, Samir Handanovic.

The victory was the best Arsenal performance of the season. The passing was fluid. The runs were concise. Arsenal were much better than in the 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Emirates. Szczesny did make up for some rather sloppy defending. However, it was the first time this campaign that the Gunners scored two goals in a game, and hopefully the quality carries over to the Manchester United match at the weekend.

Gervinho was particularly exceptional Wednesday night. The Ivorian’s excellent dribbling skills are never questioned, but this time his runs showed purpose. His cross set up Arsenal’s first goal, and his contributions were massive throughout the match.

Arsene Wenger talked after the game about Gervinho’ performance: “He was always dangerous. I told you yesterday, and many times, that he will be a big player for us. Sometimes the quality of the player is linked with the transfer amount and it is not always the case.”

Bacary Sagna put in another consistent performance. The French defender was playing out of position (left back) due to the inclusion of Carl Jenkinson (who plays right back). Sagna hooked up with Walcott for the winning goal, but, more importantly, he was a steady force on the back line.

Wojciech Szczesny was the man of the match. He is proving the doubters wrong, and is quickly becoming a top keeper. Szczesny has improved so much since the Carling Cup Final. Writers and pundits, who have asked Wenger to buy an experienced keeper, are back-tracking and are now praising Szczesny.

Arsene Wenger said this about Szczesny’s vital save during his post-match press conference: “Yes, that was a turning point of the game because it was at 1-1. You could see mentally it has an impact on their belief and they were not the same team after they missed the penalty.”

Thomas Vermaelen may miss Arsenal’s clash with Manchester United due to an injury suffered last night. Wenger told Sky Sports: “We have worries about Thomas Vermaelen after the game because he wanted to come off.”

With this victory, Arsenal may be able to secure several more signings before the end of the month. With any luck, one of them will be a centre-half.

After the match, Arsene Wenger responded to his critics: “We live in a society where everybody has an opinion on everything. I’m like somebody who flies a plane for 30 years and I have to accept that somebody can come into the cockpit and thinks he can fly the plane better than I do. But that is part of our job and we have to accept that. I just would like to say that the Club is in, overall, a very strong position. Tonight, for 14 years on the trot, we play in the Champions League. We have a new stadium, a fantastic training ground, a very good financial situation and a very strong team. Sometimes you have to take a distance a little bit [from the criticism].” Very well said, Arsene.

RVP Tries to Explain Struggles

Robin van Persie was one of the only Arsenal players to show up to the match Sunday. He has seen how this team’s fall from grace but the Dutchman has a hard time understanding the recent form: ”There were lots of things (which went wrong) – we were not consistent enough. It is difficult to talk about it now. It is going to be difficult to finish third, but we still have one game and have to win that to at least give us a chance.”

Clearly a frustrated man looking for answers. Robin has been very loyal to us over the years and has always pledged his love for Arsenal. But it must be tough to weather the storm of disappointment that has descended on the club. Even so, RVP is optimistic about next season:

”Next season we have to try [to come back stronger]. Everyone starts from scratch and we have a chance, it is up to us to prove it.”

First, Wenger must prove to his team and the fans that the club is committed to winning. The owners have to make some of the money earned from those record-high season ticket prices available to Wenger. Wenger must use this money to improve the side and win back the supporters. No one understands why Arsenal must charge the highest ticket prices in the country but no one would be complaining if we were filling the trophy cabinet.

Speaking of dissaproval from the supporters, Wojceich Szczesny commented about the very issue yesterday: ”I totally understand the frustration of the fans, and we apologise for our lack of trophies this season. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world and we should be winning trophies every year.”

It is all fine and dandy to talk about being one of the best clubs in the world. Many Arsenal players and coaches and pundits have said the very same things. Of course, we cannot win silverware every single season. And our club has had longer droughts historically. But the philosophy did not stay the same during these droughts.

We went on an 18-year trophyless run from the 1952-53 season until the 1970-71 season. We sacked four managers in that period before Bertie Mee finally ended the drought with the double-winning side. Not saying that it is time for Arsene to leave but just that sometimes a change in philosophy can be a good thing.

In fact, Wenger should remain as manager at least for another season. He will be judged on the moves he makes in the summer and the performance of the team next season. Next season has a chance to be a defining moment for Arsene and the club. If we can emerge out of such a disappointing season with success, then it could be a memorable year for Wenger.

Hopeful thoughts on next season from Szczesny to close on: ”We will have much more desire next season as we know how close we were this season to win the Carling Cup and Premier League. That gives us more motivation and desire to go for it next year, and obviously we will be one year more experienced compared to what we were this year.”

Szczesny: Wenger is the Best

Keeper Wojceich Szczesny has emerged this season as the starting man in goal for the Gunners. He also says some interesting things in the media. Szczesny always sticks up for his team and his manager. Maybe this lad is the leader we need. He certainly is one of the louder players out there as a keeper needs to be. Here is what he had to say about Wenger:

Szczesny has been a revelation for us this season.

“It (the criticism if Wenger) is ridiculous. If you ask any of the players, they will stand by the manager. He built this thing from nothing and I believe he is the best manager in the world. He puts his reputation on the line with young players. We all take individual responsibility for our mistakes, and everyone has played their part in this season’s disappointments.”

Szczesny lost me there. Wenger did not build Arsenal from nothing. We had the reputation of being a top club in England long before Arsene got here. Sure, he is the best manager we have had in modern times, but he did not build the club up from nothing. Our previous manager, George Graham for you youngsters, won two league titles, an FA Cup, an UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and two league titles. Maybe Szczesny should have opened up the record books.

Graham, of course, was known for his outwardly defensive style. Arsene made our club one of the most exciting sides to watch in the world. Wenger does deserve criticism because of the lack of trophies. Szczesny was not part of the side for the past six seasons so maybe he should not be commented on the matter so strongly.

Robin van Persie believes that his team need to get over the last hurdle by becoming champions next season:

“It is time to make that final step. We came so close a couple of times and achieved a [Carling Cup] final this year, but we need to play at least two or three finals and be involved in those circumstances.

“If you look at Manchester United, we can be better than them but they are [most likely] in the final of the Champions League, have a big chance of winning the Premier League and were in the semi-final of the FA Cup. We want to be in those positions and it’s up to us to do that.”

RVP went on to say that it is frustrating when you beat the top sides but drop points against teams in the middle-to-lower half of the table. This season we have beaten Chelsea and United at home but have dropped points at home to Sunderland and Blackburn. Let us all hope that we can see more consistency next season.

Szczesney Still Has Hope

Szczesny still thinks Arsenal can catch Man United.

Arsenal are currently six points behind Manchester United with six games to play. Wojceich Szczesny, who made his return from injury yesterday, still thinks that his side can emerge as the champions of England: “Of course we still believe we can win the title. We still have to play United and they also have to play Chelsea. They will drop points and we believe we’re good enough to win every game remaining.

“Tottenham is a very good match for us to come back from a big disappointment and we owe it to the fans because they’re very disappointed about what happened against Liverpool.  We owe them a result at White Hart Lane.

“The draw was a huge disappointment because with a minute to go we scored what we thought was a winning goal. We’re all gutted. It was a cheap penalty to give away whether it was one or not. We needed to win really badly to keep the pressure on United.”

”We’re only thinking about winning the title, not who is behind us.

“We go into everything to finish first. We are Arsenal, we don’t want to finish second and we definitely don’t want to finish third.

“I still feel a little uncomfortable when I’m in goal. I wear a special protection but it didn’t cause me any trouble against Liverpool.”

Szczesny has wisdom beyond his years. The 21 year-old keeper is the future in goal for us. He covers the net well and can actually play the ball confidently in the air. He is a much better option to Manuel Almunia, who most Gooners hope will just go away in the summer. Szczesny is not 100%, as you can see from his comments, but he is a much better option than the either Lehmann or Almunia.

Despite all of the drama, we can still win the league. If United slip up just once or twice, we will be right back in it. The goal is to be within three points or less of United come the match at the Emirates on May 1st. We, of course, have to win most if not all of our remaining matches. The Red Devils will visit Newcastle tomorrow night and we will play Spurs on Wednesday.

Match Preview: Manchester United vs Arsenal

The Gunners will have yet another chance to bounce back on form tomorrow evening against Manchester United at Old Trafford. After the referee knocked us down, can we get up and beat the league leaders. The Red Devils are also looking to get back on form after two consecutive defeats against Chelsea and Liverpool in the league. The team that is able to rebound from poor form will be the team that earns a place in the FA Cup semifinal.

Szczesny will miss six weeks, leaving Arsenal with only one healthy keeper.

We both will be missing some key players. Cesc, Szczesny, and Walcott (not to mention Vermaelen) will miss the match. United will be without Nani and Rio Ferdinand. Nani has been United’s best player this season in my opinion, despite his shocking header to Dirk Kuyt. He will leave a big gap in the United attack.

Wojceich Szczesny will be out long term with the injury to his finger that he sustained in Barcelona. Here is Wenger addressing that situation: “We need now an experienced goalkeeper as cover for Almunia because Mannone is out for six weeks so we cannot call on him.

“Mannone is here at the training ground having treatment but he cannot play for the next six weeks. We can call him back [from Hull City] but he is not available.

“We have Wojciech out, in my opinion for six weeks. We have Fabianski out for the rest of the season. We need absolutely some cover in goal.”

Maybe Eboue should work on his keeping just in case. Almunia, who was fantastic in the Barca match, has to stay healthy tomorrow or it go be a long day for Arsenal fans.

Sir Alex Ferguson has bee quite unsportsmanlike recently. Of course, he constantly badgers the referees as always. He backs them up when the call goes for him, but when the call is against him, watch the sparks fly. He was so ashamed of his side’s performance at Anefield that he did not even talk to the media after the match. Very sorry loser indeed.

The media have been fawning over Barcelona all week. Their love for the Spanish side is shocking. The emphasis should have been on the decision made by the referee. Instead, the media made it out like the call didn’t change the game. Such is the life of some of these reporters, UEFA lapdogs. We would have gone through if RVP had not been sent off.

There is definitely an increase of Barcelona hate going around North London. Dani Alves is sickening to watch. One of the most arrogant players in football. Javier Mascherano has turned into the Arsenal-basher. It is really a shame because I used to like him so so much (Ha!). And then Guardiola says Wilshere is no better than a B-team Barca player. Give me a break! That team is so rubbish unless they are aided by lucky calls.

Unless Barcelona play one of the English teams, I would love to see them go out in the quarterfinals. Watch Shakhtar rip them to threads. I would love to seem them play Tottenham the most though. See how many goals they can put up at White Hart Lane.

Anyway, back to the matters at hand. Hopefully, we can at least force a replay, because I think we can beat United at the Emirates any day of the week. The old gentlemen they have playing in their midfield are out of gas.

Some in the media seem to think that tomorrow’s match will really be Manchester United reserves versus Arsenal reserves. That will not be the case at all. Even though it is an FA Cup match and not a league game, both managers will likely start their strongest available sides. Arsene will, and we will see whether Ferguson will as well. Maybe he will just go into a hisy fit instead.

Check back tomorrow night after the match for a full report.
