Arsenal squandered another lead last night. Robin van Persie scored for the Gunners, but Benfica answered back in the second half with goals from Pablo Aimar and Nolito.
Van Persie put Arsenal ahead in the 33rd minute. Andrey Arshavin sent a nice ball through to Kieran Gibbs on the wing. Gibbs made an excellent cross, and RVP tapped the ball into the net. It was an easy finish to get wrong, but the Dutchman doesn’t miss open chances.
Pablo Aimar slipped through the Arsenal defence to score the equaliser in the 49th minute. Aimar was able to shield the ball from Thomas Vermaelen, make a nice turn, and shuffle the ball in the net. Vermaelen really should have done better against on of the smallest player on the pitch.
Nolito notched the winner for Benfica in the 60th minute. He turned neatly before firing a low shot from 18 yards out. The curler beat Fabianski at the near post and secured a Benfica victory.
This match was more like a competitive game than another of Arsenal’s previous pre-season match-ups. Benfica were determined to fight, and the match was rough at times. Benfica were a good final test for the Gunners before the season begins. After the match, Arsene Wenger commented:
“We got the intensity we wanted, it was a competitive game and we were challenged by a good team who had a lot of experienced players.”
As a result of the combative nature of the match, RVP suffered an injury near the end of the half. The Dutchman was taken out by Arsene Wenger at the interval. Wenger gave an injury update after the game:
“It (RVP’s injury) is an ankle problem, I don’t know how bad it is. Gibbs has a muscular [thigh] problem and Vermaelen has a slight back problem.”
Here are the notable performers from yesterday’s match:
Best player: Kieran Gibbs: Gibbs was impressive at left back last night. He was hanging back more than usual, and he was actually defending effectively. Gibbs usually focuses only on attacking, but, for the first time, he showed he can be a complete left back. Hope to see more performances like this from Gibbs.
Worst Player: Tomas Rosicky: Rosicky was terrible. He just could not help but give the ball away. Rosicky and Arshavin kept getting in each other’s way, and the Czech midfielder looked lost. He is a frustrating player in that he can sometimes look great (and everyone wonders why he doesn’t play more) and other times look poor (and everyone wonders how he ever gets on the pitch).
The match really changed in the second half. Benfica had more quality players on the bench than Arsenal, and it was evident. The experienced Pablo Aimar led the Benfica attacks in the second half, along with Javier Saviola. Wenger said after the match:
“Benfica played well for the full 90 minutes and the second half was a bit one-way traffic. We played well for 45 minutes and, after that, we dropped. We missed many players and you could see that in the second half.”
Overall, the Gunners looked sloppy, even in the first half. They failed to get RVP more involved in the match. The Dutchman only touched the ball a few times, and one of those times resulted in Arsenal’s only goal.
Gervinho exhibited his excellent ball control, but also his poor finishing.
If this match is any indication, Arsenal will struggle out of the gates. August is a tough month for the Gunners: Newcastle away, Udinese home, Liverpool home, Udinese away, Manchester United away. There needs to be improvement.
