Arsenal 2-1 Newcastle: Gunners comeback… again

Thomas Vermaelen scored a last-minute winner for the Gunners as they completed yet another come-from-behind victory, this time over Newcastle. Arsenal also set a Premier League record on Monday night for the most comeback wins in a row with four. Resilient.

Arsenal have exhibited a ‘never give up’ mentality recently, and nothing represented that motto more than Thomas Vermaelen’s effort in the dying moments of this match. The Belgian centre-back sprinted from Arsenal’s penalty area to join the last attack of the game. Perhaps Vermaelen was fortunate that the ball fell to him, but luck tends to descend upon those who work hard. In fact, the Verminator almost ran past the ball and had to reach his leg back to knock the ball past Tim Krul.

Even in the 95th minute of the contest, Vermaelen still had the energy and desire to race up the pitch from a defensive position, and he was not the only one. When the break began, waves and waves of Arsenal players flooded into the Newcastle box. In stark contrast to earlier in the season, Arsene Wenger’s side are now showing a terrific amount of urgency. They just would not settle for a draw.

On the other side, Alan Pardew’s team looked happy to settle for the point. Before Vermaelen scored our second, Newcastle were even trying waste the clock by holding the ball near the corner flag. Personally, I was surprised by their tactics because I had previously respected the Magpies as a side with high ambition. Fortunately, Alan Pardew and his players paid the price for their decisions.

Tim Krul and Robin van Persie may have been arguing about the Newcastle’s time-wasting. The Holland team-mates confronted each other at different times during both the first half and the second half. As expected, the morning papers are blowing this incident out of proportion; van Persie and Krul just exchanged a few words and light shoves. Both players received a yellow card for their actions, and Wenger was just relieved that van Persie didn’t see red:

“I’m happy Robin stayed yellow and not red. I don’t know if it is history from Holland with Krul or just today’s story. They looked a bit nervous during the game.” (Source: Daily Mirror)

Robin van Persie did not have his best performance against Newcastle. There were several different times throughout the match where he should have tried to cross instead of firing at goal. I guess we expect more than just one goal from the Dutchman, as mad as it sounds. His goal was very crucial because it halted any momentum Newcastle could have gained from Hatem Ben Arfa’s goal. Less than a minute after the Magpies took the lead, van Persie wiped away their advantage.

Tomas Rosicky has surprised quite a few with his recent good form, and he was awarded by the club with a new contract before the game on Monday. Against Newcastle, Rosicky again served as the focal point of the attack. Alex Song and Mikel Arteta sat back while Rosicky was allowed the freedom to move forward and create chances from an advanced position. His only bad moment came when he had an easy opportunity to score, but his shot was so wide that it went out for a throw-in.

Another impressive performer at the Emirates Stadium on Monday night was Theo Walcott. The English winger seems to experience many peaks and dips in his form, and he is currently at the top of his game. Theo used his pace and even a few skill moves to beat defenders down the right flank. At least for the moment, he has solidified his spot in Arsene Wenger’s starting eleven. Now, Walcott is focusing on helping the Gunners catch Tottenham:

“Tottenham have got to be watching over their shoulders now. With the squad of players we’ve got – and we’ve got a lot of players coming back to fitness now – we believe that we can go much further. It’s been an up-and-down season but it’s the way you finish that’s the most important thing.” (Source: The Guardian)

With the victory, we have moved to within one point of ‘Arry Redknapp’s side, who are struggling for air after losing to West Brom. Spurs no longer have to look over their shoulders because, by now, they can surely feel our breaths on their neck.

Most importantly, Arsene Wenger’s side were able to extend that precious momentum. The Gunners will not play at the weekend; their next match is not until next Wednesday against Everton. If the effort and fight the players have shown in recent weeks continues, we should have no problem finishing the season on a high note.

Arsenal v Newcastle: Gunners look to continue winning streak

With a victory on Monday night, Arsenal can move to within one point of Tottenham, but they will need to beat a stubborn Newcastle side with European aspirations of their own.

Arsene Wenger’s side have won all of their Premier League matches since the 22nd of January, when they were defeated 1-2 at the Emirates Stadium by Manchester United. Despite a beleaguered midfield, the Gunners bested AC Milan 3-0 last Tuesday and almost pulled off a miracle comeback. Fortunately, the injured players are starting to heal.

On Friday, Arsene Wenger said that left-back Andre Santos will be available to play against Newcastle after missing three months due to an ankle injury. Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey will also rejoin the squad, and Yossi Benayoun has a chance to be back as well. The nightmare will continue for Abou Diaby; he will not be fit to play on Monday night.

One wonders if Ramsey will be able to reclaim his spot in the midfield. The Welshman was in bad form and obviously tired before he suffered his injury. Tomas Rosicky, in particular, has been outstanding in Ramsey’s absence, and Benayoun has been more than serviceable. After spending so much time in the starting eleven this season, Ramsey will likely be relegated to the bench.

Whatever the midfield combination is on Monday night, they will likely have a difficult job against Alan Pardew’s squad. Our recent history against Newcastle is not very encouraging. Of course, everyone remembers the 4-4 from a year ago, but you may also recall that they beat us 1-0 last season at Ashburton Grove. Back in August, we drew 0-0 at St James’ Park in the first game of the campaign.

Gervinho was sent off in that dreadful opening match after lightly tapping Joey Barton on the head. In fact, an Arsenal player has seen red in each of our last three clashes with the Magpies. Arsene Wenger said that Gervinho learned from the incident:

“At Newcastle, he had a bad response to provocation from Barton. He was shocked because he felt he didn’t do a lot. But I think he learned his lesson in the first game and it’s better than [learning] after 20 [games]. It’s better to know what you are facing [in a new league]. If you want to play abroad and work abroad then you have to adapt to the local culture.” (Source: Arsenal.com)

Apparently, the English tradition to crumble to the ground like a sack of potatoes when you are tapped on the head.

Regardless, Monday’s game will be far different from the one these two sides played earlier in the season. Newcastle removed the tumour that is Joey Barton and sent him to QPR. Letting Barton leave was perhaps Alan Pardew’s best piece of business because the thug is currently infecting Rangers with his deadly disease. Arsene Wenger praised the Newcastle manager for his great work in the transfer window:

“They have bought very well in a very efficient way. Some players have made a name now who were completely unknown at the start of the season. Therefore when you look at their quality it is not surprising they are where they are.” (Source: Arsenal.com)

Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye, and Papiss Cisse are just a few of the names Pardew has brought in to reinvigorate this Newcastle side. Ba and Cisse will certainly test our back four. On the defensive side, centre-backs Fabricio Coloccini and Michael Williamson will form a barrier in front of keeper Tim Krul, who has been excellent this season.

While Newcastle are five points above Liverpool in the table, their form has dipped recently (last three results: 1-1 v Sunderland, 2-2 v Wolves, 5-0 loss to Spurs). In order to keep pace with Chelsea, they will need to get a result at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger’s team are now even on points with Chelsea (but ahead on goal difference) after the Blues scraped past Stoke on Saturday. It would be ideal for the Gunners to both widen the gap with Chelsea and draw closer to Tottenham in third. After witnessing ‘Arry Redknapp’s side lose to West Brom, it became quite clear to me that Spurs are choking. Perhaps this season, Arsenal will race to the finish line while their competitors limp towards the end of the season.

Barton, Wilshere lash out over Gervinho incident

Joey Barton answered critics on his Twitter account after his brawl with Gervinho yesterday. Jack Wilshere attacked Barton on Twitter for his behavior in the scoreless draw between Arsenal and Newcastle.

Here is what Barton said on Twitter: “Cheats dive to win pens. If there’s contact go down but dont blatantly try to con the ref. Refs have it hard enough.

“Hopefully, today proves my commitment, if it was ever in doubt? ‘Imagine if I’d stamped on Song, all the numptys would be out calling for a public execution. Cos its on me its alright? #hypocrites.

“What do people want me to do, stand and trade blows with Gervinho. If you raise your hands to players faces, you should be off. Ref got it right…

“Maybe I shouldn’ have got involved but diving and trying to win a penalty, is ****. Needs stamping out (No pun).”

Then, Barton admitted that he went down easy on the Gervinho slap: “I went down easy, no doubt. Still cant raise ur hands. Ref got it right.”

Barton is complaining about Gevinho’s “dive” (it wasn’t a dive) even when he admits that he went down too easy. Joey Barton is a menace to the Premier League. Good thing I never endorsed an Arsenal signing of this Newcastle thug.

But then Barton went overboard: “Correct or stamped on 1 of there [sic] players. I’d of been hung, drawn and quartered by u mob? Fact not conjecture.”

Barton is using hyperbole in an attempt to plead his case to reporters. He simply fell to the ground in order to get a player sent off. I wonder what Barton would have done if Gervinho went down like that if the shoe was on the other foot.

Jack Wilshere, who missed the match due to injury, reacted to the Barton-Gervinho fight on his Twitter: “That is not football! I am pretty sure abu diaby got sent off for that last year!

“I think @joey7barton was in the wrong today! He should not have got invovled [sic] and assaulted Gerviniho like that #justsaying.

“Maybe Gerviniho [sic] should not have reacted like he did as two wrongs dont make a right but barton was unprofessional!

“@joey7barton that is a form of assault my friend it should not happen on a football pitch!”

To be fair, Barton did not commit assault. In fact, this sort of behavior has been commonplace in football, and Barton relishes in starting scuffles on the pitch. Fabio Capello will not select Barton for the England squad because of incidents like yesterday’s dust up.

What really really learned is that footballers do not have much sense when it comes to proper grammar.

Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal: Barton sparks brawl

Gervinho was shown a red card late in the match after a scuffle with Joey Barton. The match finished scoreless between Newcastle and Arsenal at St James’ Park in the first match of the new season. Neither side looked like winning the match, and the Gooner faithful were left disappointed.

The biggest moment of the match came in the 75th minute. Gervinho was tripped up in the box, and Joey Barton thought that Gervinho had taken a dive. The Newcastle thug yanked Gervinho up to his feet by his shirt, and the two wrestled with one another.

As the brawl went on, Joey Barton collapsed to the ground in pain. Barton claimed the Gervinho had punched him, when, in reality, the Ivorian only lightly tapped Barton on the head. Gervinho was sent off, while the instigator, Barton, was only given a yellow card.

Barton was in a foul mood after being stepped on by Alex Song in the 58th minute. After a collision which left Barton on the ground, Song appeared to stamp on Barton’s leg. The Arsenal midfielder had already been given a yellow card. The Magpie bad boy cried to the officials, and was later rewarded by getting Gervinho sent off.

Here is how Arsene Wenger reacted to the incident (from Arsenal.com): “I think I saw two yellows or two reds but not one yellow and one red.

“There is a link between the incident [and Diaby’s sending off last season]. He got away with a yellow card both years.”

Wenger tolf the BBC: “I don’t understand the red card. I am 100% sure the referee did not see what happened.

“Will I appeal? I will have a good look at it but I am tempted to say yes.”

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew told the BBC: “He [Gervinho] dived, there is no doubt about that. Joey’s reaction was to chastise him and then there was a tussle. But then he slapped him and you can’t do that.

“Joey was incensed. When a fellow professional dives, that gets your back up. Joey is an opinionated guy. He has opinions and expressed them.”

Pardew must not have seen when Gervinho “slapped” Barton, because the Newcastle man fell to the ground in fake agony. Barton was not happy that Gervinho “dived,” so he decided to do a little acting of his own. What a hypocrite!

In fact, when analysed on replay, Gervinho did not take a dive after all. It looks like he was just clipped by the Newcastle defender and then lost his balance. Barton should seek professional help for his temper.

Aside from that incident, the match was uneventful. Both sides were easing back into competitive play. Arsenal’s passing looked sloppy in the first half, and the Gunners were still in pre-season mode. In the second half, the Arsenal midfield showed more life, but the match was disrupted by the fight.

Gervinho, aside from the sending off, did not have a great performance. He is clearly still settling into Premier League football. Gervinho used his pace and technical ability to make runs down the flanks, but failed to accomplish anything when it was time to cross the ball.

The Gunners were very hesistant to take a shot. Arsenal had the same problem last year, and Gervinho looked afraid to take a strike.

Robin van Persie had several goal opportunities. His best chances came at the end of the first half. RVP had trouble getting the ball over to his left foot, and he was unable or unwilling to take a stab with his right foot. Arshavin lifted a beautiful chip to the Dutchman in the 43rd minute, but Robin was easily edged out of the play by Steven Taylor.

Koscielny and Vermaelen started at the back, and both played well. Wenger said it best (telling Arsenal.com): “If we had conceded a goal I would have been bombarded with questions about why I don’t buy a centre back! They have to take credit.”

Wojceich Szczesny was strong in the air when Newcastle started launching the ball towards the heads. In the 17th minute, Szczesny rushed out of his goal and out of the penalty area to head the ball away from Newcastle striker Demba Ba.

Theo Walcott started the match on the bench because of injury concern. He did make an appearance after Wenger took off Andrey Arshavin in the 61st minute. Walcott took a hard strike right after coming on, but it was held by Newcastle keeper Tim Crul.

Arsenal racked up five yellow cards and one red card in the opening match. Szczesny, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Rosicky, and Song were all cautioned. Song should have been shown another yellow card after he stamped on Barton.

The Gunners may not be welcomed back at the Emirates for their first home match this Tuesday against Udinese. Arsenal supporters have been frustrated with the probable sale of Nasri and Fabregas, and there was not much to lift their spirits today.

Arsene Wenger said his team will “learn from this today.” The Gunners had better learn quickly because Champion League qualifiers against Udinese, and Premier League matches against Liverpool and Manchester United are fast approaching.

Match Preview: Newcastle v Arsenal

RVP will be the Arsenal captain today.

Arsenal will be without three key players as they take on Newcastle at St James’ Park on the first day of the new Premier League season. Twitter outlaw Joey Barton may be in the starting eleven for Newcastle.

Arsene Wenger announced yesterday that Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas will miss the match. Both players are strongly linked with moves away from London. Nasri will sit out due to sickness, while Fabregas is not yet match-fit.

Jack Wilshere will be forced to miss the match due to a real, genuine ankle injury. Wilshere said on Twitter: “Gutted not to be playing tomorrow but wish all the lads the best of luck! We need a good start! #gooners.” Abou Diaby will also not feature in the match after undergoing ankle surgery.

On a positive note, Theo Walcott, Robin van Persie, Thomas Vermaelen, and Kieran Gibbs are expected to be on the pitch after injury concerns during the pre-season. Van Persie will captain the Arsenal squad tomorrow.

Newcastle, meanwhile, will be looking to revive the magic of their four goal comeback in this fixture last season. After selling Kevin Nolan and Jose Enrique, the Magpies will be starting the season with a distinctly French feel.

The new arrivals at Newcastle include Gabriel Obertan, Johan Cabaye, and Demba Ba. But the Toon summer has revolved around the Joey Barton saga. Barton has strongly criticized the club management on Twitter. The English midfielder was not pleased by the sale of Nolan.

According to reports, Joey Barton will play a part in Alan Pardew’s squad to play Arsenal.

Despite the constant transfer rumours circling his team, Arsene Wenger is focused on Newcastle: “I believe the best thing for us, one day before the season starts, is not to focus on the possible transfers.

“What we want today is to focus on the players who play tomorrow and not the players who do not play.”

Aaron Ramsey, who could be a key player for Arsenal this season, is optimistic about the upcoming season (telling Arsenal.com): “People are entitled to their own opinions but I think and the team thinks that we are more than capable of winning something this season.”

“We’re going to believe that we can and not listen to any of the negative comments that people are saying. We’re confident in what we can do and I’m sure we’ll show that this season.”

If the Gunners are not capable of winning the Emirates Cup, then what can they win?

On a serious note, Ramsey is showing maturity at his age (20). He knows that the media is spreading the idea that Arsenal will collapse this season. From the start, the tabloids have been using headlines to scare Gooners into buying papers.

Notice that I have only brought up last season’s 4-4 draw once in this preview. This is because no Arsenal supporter feels like reliving that dreadful match. In all likelihood, today’s match will not be as painful.

Enjoy your Arsenal football!

Transfer Rumours: Lukaku, Enrique, RVP

Arsenal are the front-runners to sign Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku.  Arsene Wenger wants Jose Enrique of Newcastle to replace Gael Clichy at left back.  Real Madrid are interested in Robin van Persie.

Let’s start off with Lukaku.  According to The Sun, Arsenal has offered Anderlecht £14million for the 18-year old striker.  Chelsea are also firmly in the hunt for Lukaku.  Arsenal executives met with a Lukaku representative yesterday in London.  The Belgian striker is one of the most exciting young players in Europe.

For literally months now, Chelsea has always been the front-runner for Lukaku.  A deal sending Lukaku to Stamford Bridge seemed imminent.  Could our the Gunners hijack the deal and steal Lukaku away from those rich Blues?

Lukaku has been dubbed the “next Drogba” because of his size (1.91 m or 6 ft 3 in) and strength.  If Wenger can pull this off, then maybe the current crop of players can see the weight our club carries throughout the world.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has admitted that Jose Enrique wants to leave the Magpies for Champions League football.  According to Daily Mail, Arsenal is willing to offer  £8million for the 25-year old left back.

If Wenger brings in Enrique, it will be a sign that Kieran Gibbs is not yet ready.  Enrique has been a consistently good footballer for Newcastle over the last couple years.  He would be a solid player every week at left back.  Liverpool are also interested in the Newcastle man.

According to rumours, Real Madrid has placed a bid for Robin van Persie.  The bid is said to be worth around £30 million.  Jose Mourinho is looking for consistency up front, and the Dutchman can provide that when healthy.  Is RVP off-limits or is Wenger willing to sell any player for the right price?

That is a round-up of the latest Arsenal rumours.  Remember to read the headline: Transfer Rumours.  Notice how I did not title this post the usual headline “Transfer News.”  This is because there is nothing really concrete here, but it does spark conversation while providing a bit of fun.

Reactions to the Collapse

Many pundits, commentators, podcasters, writers, and football fans have been reacting to Arsenal’s historic collapse against Newcastle on Saturday.  But I don’t care much about what they think.  Some Arsenal players have been weighing in on the match.  Let’s see what they think.

Arsenal keeper Wojceich Szczesny: ”I cannot believe it, it is the worst feeling I have ever had in my life.  I can only say sorry to the supporters.

“I have never known anything like it.  I don’t understand what happened.  With 10 men we were capable of holding the game but there were a lot of things that went wrong.

“The whole back-four unit got changed because if the situation but we were used to playing with each other and we should still have been comfortable playing alongside each other.”

I appreciate the honesty from Szczesny.  After the sending off, Arsenal might as well been playing with four players.  It didn’t matter.  The defence collapsed and their was nothing Szczesny or any keeper could have done about it.

Andrei Arshavin: ”He [Wenger] didn’t say anything at all to us.

“He was disappointed and distraught too, like any man would be in his shoes and under such circumstances.

“Naturally, we were all sad.  Only Manchester United being defeated later that night sweetened the pill a bit.  But we are not psychologically broken.  We just cannot afford to be.”

Wolves helped brighten my day quite a bit as well.  With United’s loss, Arsenal are still right in the thick of the title race, only four points back.  Wolves will visit the Emirates at the weekend but I’m not too scared of them away from home.  They have beaten Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United in recent months so they’re certain not a club you can look past.

More from Arshavin: “If we want to win, we must not be sitting and moaning.  We need to analyse that unfortunate match and draw the right conclusions from it.  That day is over and left behind.  We need to think and prepare for the next match in the Premier League against Wolves.”

”What happened was something unbelievable with a tragic end for us.

“It was as if there was a magnet behind one of the goals because all eight were scored in it.”

Not a magnet but Philip Dowd.  Speaking of Dowd, some Gunners commented further on the terrible match official.

Barcary Sagna: ”I asked him for an explanation and he was pretty hard on me.

“I won’t repeat what words he came out with but they should never come from a referee.”

Come on Bacary, pulling the David Moyes card.  All Dowd was trying to do was make a decent quid.

More from Sagna: ”I’ve experienced the same problem (with Barton).  I was the victim of several attacks and it gets in your head.

“Abou reacted badly but the referee should have taken disciplinary measures.”

Barton is thug who plays football in his spare time.

Here’s Jack Wilshere, criticizing Dowd on his Twitter:

“Inconsistent refereeing needs to stop. It’s killing the game. If Diaby goes, what’s the difference between that and Nolan on our keeper!?? Joke.”

The FA doesn’t particularly like that sort of thing from players, but today they have decided not to act on the incident.

Arsenal need a real bounce back game against Wolves to help heal this vicious wound.

Match Report: Arsenal 4 Newcastle 4

Kevin Nolan, one of the Newcastle thugs

Well, one of the worst games in Arsenal history was played today at St. James Park.  Newcastle were able to “come back” from a four goal deficit to even the score in the second half.  Referee Philip Dowd was definitely a Newcastle supporter, handing out penalties anytime Newcastle got near the Arsenal box.  He also made it his job to show cards to the Gunners, while letting the Newcastle thugs, Barton and Nolan, get away with battery.  Even so, it looks as if Arsenal are out of the title race.

The match started with a flurry of goals from Arsenal.  Forty seconds into the game, Walcott struck with a goal off the break.  Many fans were just getting to their seat, only to see Arsenal up one on a cool finish from Walcott.  By the time three minutes passes, the Gunners were up by two.  Johan Djourou had a brilliant header off a free kick taken by Andrei Arshavin.

The Gunners weren’t done yet though.  Robin van Persie found the back of the net in the 10th minute.  Walcott sent a cross towards RVP, and the Dutchman banged it home.  Three-nil to the Arsenal and the game looked over by that time.  RVP headed home the fourth goal as well, in the 26th minute.  The Arsenal attack was ripping through the helplessly bad Newcastle defence.  Arsenal headed into halftime with what looked to be a guaranteed three points.

Then came the cruel nightmare that was the second half.  It all started with the sending off of Abou Diaby.  Diaby was fouled hard by Newcastle ruffian Joey Barton.  Diaby reacted by shoving Barton down with his hand on the back of his neck, and then pushed Barton’s partner-in-crime Kevin Nolan.  Even though Diaby received a straight red, most Arsenal fans still felt confident that the Gunners would pull through.

Newcastle’s first goal came of a penalty (surprise!) in the 68th minute.  Leon Best was fouled by Laurent Koscielny, and Dowd all to happily pointed to the spot.  Barton slotted the ball home and Newcastle got one back.  No worries though, one goal isn’t going to change much.  That was the general thought of most Gooners.  Little did we know that this was just the beginning.

After the penalty, Arsenal keeper Wojceich Szczesny tried to pick up the ball.  Well, Nolan and Barton wouldn’t have that.  They gave Szczesny a good mugging before taking the ball away.  Szczesny was given a yellow (effectively beaten and booked).  Nolan was also given a yellow but it should have been a red.  It was just as bad as Diaby’s actions and it should have earned him a sending off.

Leon Best cut the Arsenal lead to two in the 75th minute.  Best and Gael Clichy went up to challenge a ball andNewcastle got a great bounce.  Best found himself with the ball near goal and put it past Szczesny.  This is when we started to get nervous.  St. James park was alive and Newcastle had all the momentum.  It had all the makings for an Arsenal collapse.

Philip Dowd must be proud of himself, ruining a perfectly good match by calling a rubbish penalty in the 82nd minute.  No foul was committed on the play, yet Dowd pointed to the spot like brainless fool.  In his mind, Dowd was probably laughing like a schoolgirl, knowing that he will be remembered for officiating in the greatest comeback in Premier League history.

Anyway, Barton lined up for the penalty.  Szczesny was able to get a touch on it but the ball still found the net.  Now it was 4-3 and the Newcastle comeback was all but inevitable.  The Magpies were dictating the action and Arsenal was just along for the ride.

The final goal of the match was a dazzling volley from Ismael Chiek Tiote.  The Newcastle equalizer was not stunning because we all saw it coming.  It was a magnificent strike from 25 yards out but we still saw it coming.  Arsenal was crumbling.  Fabregas was nonexistent in the second half.  So much so that I thought he may be missing all together.  Well that completed the comeback, if you want to call something so much aided by the officials a comeback.

Here is some of what Wenger had to say at his post-match press conference: “It was a good game with top intensity.  Overall I have to say we played great football and we have to take a lot of positives out of this game.

“It is difficult at the moment to swallow. But time will help and we will get over that.

“Overall I think we have to take a lot of encouragement from our first-half performance.”

When asked how Arsenal’s title chances were damaged: ”We dropped two points, that’s it.”

“Some decisions went against us today.  Diaby I think was too nervous in his reaction which he shouldn’t have done.  I think as well Barton should have been sent off for the same tackle.

“My opinion is not important. What is important is that the referees take the right decision and at the moment we have to deal with that.

“I don’t think he made the right decision – the first foul from Barton was quite bad.

“What changed is that they got a penalty, 4-1, and from then on we were under pressure.

“It’s difficult to play at the pace we played for 90 minutes, especially when we went down to 10 men. It was very difficult.”

I really think Wenger has to start standing up against these corrupt officials.  It seems as if too many calls are going against the Gunners for it to be a coincidence.  Wenger may have to do some politicking for his squad.  You have to make the referees think twice before calling rubbish penalties like the second one that was called today.

Ultimately though, it wasn’t all the referee.  Many people are pointing to the Diaby red card as the turning point.  Maybe so, but just because the Gunners are down a man, doesn’t mean they should stop defending.  As for taking the positives from this game, there aren’t many.  Sure the first half was amazing, but the second half is the one that ruined our weekend.

Match Preview: Arsenal vs Newcastle

The Gunners will travel to St. James Park to play Newcastle tomorrow afternoon.  All the talk around Newcastle has of course been about the departure of striker Andy Carroll.  The Magpies were able to defeat Arsenal at the Emirates in November.  The Gunners did blow past Newcastle in the Carling Cup, beating them 4-0 at St. James.  All the matches from now on are important for Arsenal is they wish to stay in the title race.

Newcastle was able to earn a surprising was able to fight out a draw against Tottenham last Saturday but fell to Fulham during the week.  So a mixed bag of results recently for Newcastle.  Not so for the Gunners.  Arsene Wenger’s squad has won every match since the first leg of the Carling Cup semifinal against Ipswich Town on January 12th.  So that’s six straight wins for Arsenal.

Manchester United (5 points ahead of Arsenal) have not yet lost a game in the Premier League.  Robin van Persie thinks that will change soon and that United will eventually drop points:”We all know United’s schedule, we know Chelsea’s schedule, but the main thing is to just look at our own.

“We have got a tough opponent now at Newcastle away, and so we only need to look at that.

“I am confident Manchester United will drop points, 100 per cent, because they have big games coming up – they have their own derby, they have games against Chelsea, other big games, so we will see what is going to happen.

“We just have to stick to ourselves and I am confident we can fight until the end.”

RVP has been on fire of late, seemingly scoring at will.  Here’s what the Dutchman said about his comeback from injury: “I am feeling really happy and healthy in myself at the moment.  I was right to take things quite carefully when I first came back – you have to keep in mind that I was basically injured for an entire calendar year, except for the summer.

“I’d had two big ankle injuries in the space of 12 months and needed some time to get properly fit.  That is why the boss, the medical team and I chose to do things more slowly, step by step, and I think it has paid off in the end.

“Since the Chelsea game things have really kicked on – I have become stronger in every game and every training session.  Sometimes it is good to start cautiously and that was definitely the case for me.”

Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny received some good news yesterday.  He will be called up to the French squad for a friendly against Brazil next week.  This will be the first time Koscielny is in the French squad.  Koscielny is on a bit of a goal-scoring run for the Gunners, scoring against Everton midweek and against Ipswich town in the Carling Cup semifinal.  Arsenal, always a breeding ground for French talent, will have four players in the squad (Diaby, Clichy, Sagna, Koscielny).  No doubt that Samir Nasri would also be in the squad if he was healthy.
