Fulham 2-1 Arsenal: 10-man Gunners collapse

On the second day of the New Year, Arsenal were haunted by the same occurrences the plagued them in the previous year. Fulham, who were helped immensely by referee Lee Probert, scored two late goals to stun the Gunners.

The real turning point in the game occurred when Probert decided to award a second yellow card to Johan Djourou. His first booking was probably justified, but the second was far from a foul. Bobby Zamora tumbled to the ground after realising that Szczesny would beat him to the ball, and out came the red card. Oddly, there were no other cards shown all night by Probert.

After we went down to ten men, Fulham started hunting down the equaliser. Ironically, it was Zamora who snatched the points away from Arsene Wenger’s side. The first goal was a result of our typical inability to defend set pieces. Fulham’s winner was an excellent volley by Zamora, though Szczesny maybe should have reacted quicker to the near-post finish. To his credit, Zamora did execute a van Persie-like strike.

Arsene Wenger was fuming at his post-match press conference about various decisions made by the referee:

“The referee influenced the game completely the wrong way in my opinion. We cannot influence that. We had a good first half … in the second half we were more tired and in the last 10 minutes we lost the game because we were down to 10 men. The first yellow card was not a yellow card; the second yellow card was a foul for us. It was also 100% a penalty for us in the first half.

“When Djourou got the first yellow, every time they went down to get him the second yellow. He did nothing at all. I saw it coming because when Frei came on the game was all [about] looking for the second yellow card for Djourou. The referee was naive enough to give it. We played many games recently and we knew that if we dropped our level we would be in trouble. But we would not have been in trouble if we had stayed with 11 on the pitch.” (Source: The Guardian)

Regarding the penalty incident in the first half, Senderos made minimal contact with Gervinho, although he made no contact with the ball. Had it been given, it would have been a soft penalty. That said, referees have simply refused to award penalties to us in recent weeks.

Many writers are now wrongly bashing Arsenal’s defending for the loss at Craven Cottage. Before the red card, the back four were very strong. Laurent Koscielny scored and was terrific at the back. Despite playing out of position, Francis Coquelin was fantastic at left-back. All of the trouble began when Djourou was sent off.

In reality, we should have killed this game in the first half. So many opportunities were wasted early on and we could have easily been up by three at the break. Unfortunately, Walcott was again under-performing, and Gervinho finds it very hard to put the ball in the net. The Ivorian winger can become one of the best wingers in the Premiership if he can only improve his finishing.

Chelsea have jumped back into the top four while we fall on the outskirts once again. My feeling is that the race for the Champions League spots will not finish until near the very end of the season.

Arsenal supporters found out that U2′s famous lyrics are correct: “Nothing changes on New Year’s Day.” Just as our club were seemingly moving on from our terrible 2011, the players and the problems with the team are still the same. Still, there is no reason to overreact to this result because it is very difficult to get a result away from home when your side is down a man.

Match Preview: Fulham v Arsenal

With the other top clubs seemingly struggling, Arsenal will look to make up more ground on Tuesday at Craven Cottage. Fulham earned a point at the Emirates Stadium earlier in the season.

Arsene Wenger will be without Thomas Vermaelen, who suffered a calf injury against QPR. The options at the back are so very few. I’d expect to see Ignasi Miquel or Francis Coquelin at left-back, with Sebastien Squillaci and Per Mertesacker in the middle, and Laurent Koscielny on the right.

The loan move bringing Thierry Henry back to North London has yet to be finalised, so he will not be available for Fulham.

Robin van Persie could very well start on the bench because there are no longer any records to break, though Wenger may decide to play the Dutchman on Monday and rest him against Leeds next week. So far, van Persie has started every match during this holiday period.

Arsenal have sent Emmanuel Frimpong on loan to Wolves for six months. He could make his debut for his new club as early as Monday when Wolverhampton take on Chelsea. Frimpong is glad that he will be able to play more competitive football:

”It’s an opportunity for me to get more games. I’m just coming here to add more quality to the team, hopefully, and I can’t wait to get started.” (Source: Wolves’ Official Website)

After beating QPR on Saturday, we have another London derby on Monday, albeit not always a very heated one. Fulham are currently 14th in the table and come into this match after two consecutive draws to Norwich and Chelsea, respectively. In their last home game, Fulham were destroyed 5-0 by Manchester United.

The Cottagers frustrated the Gunners by holding them to a 1-1 draw at Ashburton Grove in November. Martin Jol’s side packed men behind the ball in that match, and I assume they will do the same on Monday.

Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele are Fulham’s dangerous attacking duo. Bobby Zamora has apparently been dropped due to his poor relationship with Martin Jol, though he has also picked up an injury. Andy Johnson, Mark Schwarzer, Damien Duff, Simon Davies, and Zdenek Grygera are also projected to miss this match.

Regarding Fulham, Arsene Wenger said in the lead-up to Monday’s game: “It is always difficult for us against Fulham though. They are a good side, well-organised and have a good technical level especially Dickson Etuhu and Danny Murphy who did well on the day.

“It will be tough again this time. You can see that everyone finds motivation against Arsenal, everyone organises well and stops us from playing. That will happen again at Fulham.

“But, after the three points against QPR, we will be very focused to get the win there.”

It is important to get a victory to start the New Year. Even though nothing actually changes on New Years’ Day, it is symbolic because all Gooners want 2012 to be a better year for the club than the mostly terrible twelve months that preceded it. All of that starts against Fulham on the second day of the year.

Arsenal 1-1 Fulham

Vermaelen was responisble for all the scoring on Satuday.

It was the best of times and the worst of times for Thomas Vermaelen. His own goal gave Fulham the lead, but his header took that lead away. Arsenal looked sluggish and were unable to defeat the organised Cottagers.

Top Performers

1. Fulham defence: The Cottagers really kept men behind to ball to stifle our forward play. Chris Baird made a goal-saving clearance on van Persie’s shot in the 59th minute. Mark Schwarzer made several remarkable saves, including a brilliant stop on Johan Djourou’s header in the 74th minute. Martin Jol made sure that none of the defenders took any risks by joining the attack. Fulham are just looking for points at the moment, so they can’t be blamed for playing so defensively.

2. Abou Diaby: Considering that this was his second appearance since his return from injury, Diaby was very impressive. Arsene Wenger brought the French midfielder on as a substitute in the 68th minute. Diaby still has the skill to glide past defenders and looked very fresh, which you cannot always say about our subs.

3. Johan Djourou: He looked really looked comfortably playing at right back. Djourou’s positioning was spot-on, and he was solid throughout the match.

Worst Performers

1. Aaron Ramsey: His performance on Saturday at the Emirates reminded me of his terrible display against Spurs at White Hart Lane last month. Far too many give-aways. Instead of providing his usual penetrating passes, Ramsey was simply attempting ambitious long balls that failed to come off. Realising his poor form, Wenger removed Ramsey in the 68th minute.

2. Andrey Arshavin: The little Russian was finally given the opportunity to start a match alongside Robin van Persie, and he failed miserably. He did have a goal disallowed because of a close offside call in the 4th minute, but he never supplied any threat after that early moment. He was withdrawn in the 75th minute in favour of Marouane Chamakh. Arshavin should give Wenger a reason to play him before he start crying to the press about his lack of playing time.

Team Performance

The Gunners were noticeably tired from their mid-week victory over Dortmund in the Champions League. The passing wasn’t as quick or accurate, and the finishing left Gooners wanting more. Even the incredible Dutchman couldn’t convert his chances against Fulham. The lack of urgency made the job easier for Fulham.

To be fair, Fulham did not let any holes open in their backline. Gervinho and Theo have been successful getting behind the back four in recent weeks, but the Cottagers would not allow Arsenal to break quickly.

Whenever Fulham got the ball, they tried to slow the match down. They made us play to their pace. Fulham also did a nice job of keeping the ball, especially in the first half.

While Martin Jol’s side did defend expertly, we did not make enough of our chances. One goal on twenty shots (nine on target) is simply not clinical enough. We are not a one-man team, but someone needs to step up when van Persie is not having his best day.

The Managers

Martin Jol said he was satisfied with the result (Sky Sports): “They’re a good team are Arsenal and we thought they might be tired after (their Champions League game on) Wednesday. We ended up with a draw. We would have loved a win but I would have settled for a draw before the game and I will settle for that now.”

Arsene Wenger on the fatigue his players in this match (Arsenal.com): “It is a punctual problem because we gave a lot on Wednesday night. It is the shortest time you can get Wednesday night to Saturday afternoon. But it is not an excuse. It is an explanation. We want to be in the Champions League so we cannot cry when we are tired. Our challenge is to win these kinds of games even when we are tired.”

Exactly. Mid-week match or no mid-week match, we still need to beat Fulham at home. Manchester United drew 1-1 with Newcastle (who are also above us) and Manchester City and/or Liverpool will drop points on Sunday. We had an opportunity to gain some ground but we wasted it.

One the bright side, we likely would have lost this match earlier in the season. Vermaelen recovered from his own goal to put a powerful header into the correct net. This result should not result in a drop of confidence in the team, but it was still a disappointing performance.

Match Preview: Arsenal v Fulham

Arsenal look to continue their good form against Fulham in Saturday’s late kickoff at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners have never lost to the Cottagers at home.

Injury News

At his pre-match press conference, Arsene Wenger said that the squad will be the same as it was for the Dortmund match, which means that Jack Wilshere, Carl Jenkinson, Bacary Sagna, Tomas Rosicky, and Kieran Gibbs will be out with injuries.

Fulham will have many key players missing for this match. Damien Duff, Steve Sidwell, Simon Davies, Zdenek Grygera, Orlando Sa, and Stephen Kelly are all injured, so Martin Jol’s starting eleven and bench will be weakened.

Recent Form

Na$ri scored two goals in this fixture last season to lead the Gunners to a 2-1 victory. Remember that that match was early in the season before the French midfielder’s form dropped dramatically. The last time these two sides met ended in a 2-2 draw in the last game of the season, which turned out to be meaningless.

We have secured the top spot of our Champions League group and have not lost a match in well over a month. After the 2-1 win against Dortmund mid-week, the team should have the momentum to dispatch Fulham.

Fulham have struggled under new manager Martin Jol, which is not suprising given that he used to work at Tottenham. The Cottagers are currently stationed at 16th in the table and are only two points off the drop. A 0-0 last week against fellow underachievers Sunderland will do nothing to lift their spirits. Fulham did give Spurs a very tough test earlier in the month but were beaten 3-1.

The last time Fulham beat a London rival away from home was in 2003… and that was against Spurs. All signs point to an easy three points, which makes me very nervous as an Arsenal supporter.

Key Battles

1. Robin van Persie v Brede Hangeland: The physical Norwegian centre-half will try to stop the red-hot Dutchman. Robin is the only players scoring for us at the moment, so Fulham will likely design a plan to focus attention on van Persie. Hangeland is their best defender, so my bet is that he will be closely marking van Persie.

2. Dembele & Dempsey v Arsenal defenders: Both Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele are tricky, slippery players. Our back four needs to be very careful when attempting a tackle in the penalty area on these two players. Dempsey, in my opinion, is a very underrated player, while Dembele is at the heart of most Fulham attacks.

3. Theo Walcott v Fulham’s right side: The Cottagers usually have Dempsey and John Arne Riise playing on the right side of the pitch. Dempsey likes to drift inside, and Riise loves to attack. This will create an opening for Walcott to hit Fulham on the break.

The Managers

Fulham manager Martin Jol on Saturday’s match (Fulham’s Official Website): “We have a good, experienced team and we’re capable of getting a result on Saturday. Our priority is to defend well but play with confidence and belief. We’ve done that in our last two away games and kept two clean sheets so we’ve got confidence.”

Arsene Wenger and Jol got into a heated argument when Jol was still at Spurs. His first mistake was taking the job at White Hart Lane, and his second was threatening a football genius by talking up the size of his fists. Gooners should give him hell at the Emirates on Saturday.

Remember Alex Song’s awful performance against at Craven Cottage in 2006? Wenger was forced to take him out at halftime, but since then, the Cameroonian holding midfielder has become one of the first names on the teamsheet. Arsene talked about the incident at his pre-Fulham presser (Arsenal.com): “I thought about that Fulham game [in 2006] as well today.

“It shows that players need to be given time and confidence. Unfortunately in the big clubs you cannot always do it. He is one of the players who surprised everybody. You wouldn’t expect what he delivers at the moment.”

Match Musings: Fulham 2 Arsenal 2

Arsenal were never able to get on the front foot in this match. Fulham did will to pressure our fragile back four and were rewarded with two goals. We are a mess right now and the end of the season could not come soon enough. Manchester City took care of Bolton to secure the 3rd position, which means we will have to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League next season.

Arsene really surprised me with his starting lineup. It resembled a 4-4-2 with Chamakh and RVP up top. Nasri and Ramsey were out on the wing with Wilshere and Diaby in the center. Ramsey is better in the middle but he can definitely play on the wing if he needs to. Samir may have played his last game for us, depending on how his contract situation works out.

Going into the match, I expected to lose. Our form in recent weeks speaks for itself, despite our victory over United. We have earned 12 points in the eleven matches since the Carling Cup final defeat. If we would have sustained that same form over the entire 38-game season, we would finish with 38 points. That would have seen us relegated this season.

Some of you may have noticed that I have changed the title of this post from “Match Report” to “Match Musings” This is because I feel it would serve the readers better if I gave my thoughts on the match instead of just detailing the match bit by bit. Of course I will still go over some of the goals and important moments, but more focus will be put on my “musings” and not just a report.

Speaking of the match, the Dutchman scored again. RVP is on fire and scoring almost at will. If he can stay on the pitch next season, he could be the top scorer in the Premier League. RVP showed off his clinical finishing when he equalised to put the game even at one goal a piece.

Fulham took the lead 2-1 with an easy goal from Bobby Zamora, a simple tap-in. If our defence allows Steve Sidwell and Bobby Zamora the right of passage then how will they do next season against some of the better attacks in the country. Arsene has a lot of thinking to do and hopefully a fair bit of dealing as well.

Theo Walcott pulled Arsenal even with a goal in the dying minutes of the season. Walcott finally beat Schwarzer with a low striker. The Fulham keeper (former Arsenal target) did excellent to hold our attack at bay up to that point. Is he any better than Szczesny? If you saw his performance against Liverpool recently, you would have to say no.

Theo saves the day after coming in as a substitute. He also saved the team the shame of a third straight loss. If anything, the point meant that we did not end the season with a loss.

Wenger held his last post-match presser of the season today. Here is some of what he had to say: “In the end, we felt fourth place was disappointing because, three weeks ago, we were in a position to win the league. We didn’t lose third place today, we lost it last week.”

Wenger is disappointed but not ready to participate in reckless spending: “I think I am responsible for the results and I am very disappointed.”

“In decisive moments, we have never had the whole team together. We have to rectify some things in our squad and we will try to do it. But it is not easy, even with money.”

Wenger praised the home fans quickly before returning to his point on spending:  ”But we are not to go overboard. Maybe one year you will realise that it is not easy to finish in the top four every time. Even if people say we have to spend money, we have to be realistic. We cannot buy players for £50 million and, even if we try to strengthen our team and spend money if needed, that is fact.”

Seems like this summer will be buisness as usual for Arsene. He will not splash the cash for veteran players when he can spend less to develop young talent. Some supporters do not remember that this philosophy is the same philosophy that built the Invincibles. No one had heard much of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, and Robert Pires before they became staples at Highbury.

Expect less posts now that the season is over. I will try to post as often as I can but I will not post if there are no stories that day worth posting about. Be sure

Match Preview: Fulham v Arsenal

Well, here we are. The last match of the season. It has been a long, tumultuous campaign for us. Disappointing results combined with clear and predictable weaknesses leave us wondering what the future will bring. It seems as if every pundit with half a brain pointed out our problems in the summer. But does our manager even recognize these problems enough to fix them.

Fulham have done very well under Mark Hughes this season. They are currently eighth in the table and have had success at home this season. Coming off a 2-0 victory at Birmingham puts them in a position to possibly finish as high as seventh. Not much to play for really for The Cottagers. They will be looking to send their fans home with a positive performance, which we were unable to do at the Emirates.

Fulham can be beaten at Craven Cottage. Liverpool really pounced on them in earlier in the month with a 5-2 thrashing. Many were surprised because of how staunch the Fulham defence had been up to that point at Craven Cottage. If we can copy Liverpool’s success, then maybe we have a chance on finishing third.

Fulham still have a chance to play in Europe next season. If they avoid any sort of card, then Fulham will qualify for the Europa League through the Fair Play table. Some managers think the Europa League is a useless competition that only tires out the players for the important fixtures. Maybe so for a team aspiring for the Champions League like Liverpool and Tottenham. But I think Fulham would welcome a spot in the Europa League.

Arsene Wenger talked extensively about his summer plans in his pre-match press conference: “I think it is the responsibility of a football manager to behave in a responsible way, of course.”

“It is a situation for the fans which I can completely understand. But we are in a job where other clubs do not respect the basic rules of any other company and we have to live with that.”

Wenger talked more about the reckless nature of the “other clubs”: “They do not live with their natural resources which is why UEFA want to fight for the fair play.”

Arsene is determined not to let Nasri and/or Clichy leave on a free transfer, like Mathieu Flamini did: “We will sort that situation out quickly after the end of the season. We need to know very quickly.

“We do not want to do that [allow them to leave on a free like Flamini]. We won’t allow that to happen.

“It has to be resolved before the season starts again.”

So that means that both Nasri and Clichy have decisions to make very soon. If they choose to leave, we could have a mass exodus from North London. Cesc could go, along with spare parts like Denilson, Bendtner, Almunia, Rosicky, and more. If thay happens, then Wenger would have a lot of money to spend and will could see an entirely different Arsenal next season.

Here is my projected starting eleven for today’s match:

Szczesny

Gibbs          Squillaci           Vermaelen          Sagna

Wilshere           Song           Ramsey

Arshavin                 van Persie                    Walcott

Let me end this post on a positive note. The Arsenal Ladies won the FA Cup yesterday, their 11th FA Cup victory. The Ladies are the most successful women’s club in the country. Maybe the lads could learn a thing or too.
