Arsenal send Arshavin on loan to Zenit St Petersburg

As the Led Zeppelin lyrics go, "Good times, bad times, you know I had my share."

Andrey Arshavin has completed a loan move to Zenit St Petersburg. The little Russian’s time with the Gunners can only be categorised as a failure, though he did have a few special moments.

Arsenal announced on Friday that Arshavin will join his former club Zenit on loan until the end of the English season. In the final minutes of the 2009 winter transfer window, Arshavin became Arsenal’s record signing at approximately £15 million. Similarly, the deal sending Andrey back to Zenit was completed in the final hour before the Russian transfer deadline. During his career at the Emirates Stadium, the little Russian scored 30 goals and collected 35 assists.

The Arsenal website states that Arshavin accepted the transfer “in order to maximise his opportunities for regular first-team football ahead of Euro 2012 in June.” Perhaps Arshavin will regain his form while at Zenit and star at the European championships before rejoining Arsenal at the start of next season.

While many of us would love to see the little Russian make the most of his talent in North London, Arshavin may have already played his last match for our club. According to The Guardian, he is aiming for a permanent move to Zenit in the summer. He has played sparingly since the emergence of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and both wide players were involved in THAT substitution against Manchester United. That moment seems now to be the beginning of the end of Arshavin’s stay at Arsenal.

And Arshavin did produce several flashes of brilliance during his career as a Gunner. Most will remember his four-goal masterpiece at Anfield. Last season, Arshavin was responsible for my favourite moment of that tortuous campaign when he scored the winner against Barcelona at Ashburton Grove.

However, these fantastic displays were few and far between in the last two years. Many pundits, fans, and writers have criticised Arshavin for his laziness and general defensive ineptitude. I believe that he has greatly improved his work rate this season, but once a first impression is imprinted on the mind, it is hard to remove it.

Many have added Arshavin’s name to the list of Arsenal players who are simply deadwood. At this point, I would have to agree because it appears that the situation had become unsalvageable. The little Russian has been in such terrible form that only a change of scenery can possibly cure him.

The move back to Zenit, where Arshavin spent his first eight years in professional football, is reminescient of Thierry Henry’s short comeback. A club legend returns a bit older with a bit less juice in his legs, but the excitement and expectations of the supporters remain the same.

If Arshavin does not return to our club, he can at least take solace in the fact that his last match was a memorable one. He came on as a substitute at the Stadium of Light and set up Thierry Henry’s winning goal in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory. That goal may very well be the last of Henry’s legendary Arsenal and Premier League career.

Arshavin’s absence will create a new opportunity for another player to prove himself.

Unfortunately, Arsene Wenger’s squad is weak in the depth department. The departure of Arshavin means that someone else will need to step up and fill his role on the bench. Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gervinho, and Walcott are definitely the top three wide players in the squad. My bet is that Yossi Benayoun will be used more often now that Arshavin is gone. Another possibility, although less likely, is that Wenger will call on a young player such as Benik Afobe.

Arshavin: Wenger never listens to anyone

Andrey Arshavin has taken a bold stand against Arsene Wenger. The little Russian said that his manager will not listen to anyone regarding tactics. The comments could jeopardise Arshavin’s future at the club, though he did say that he does not want a move at the moment.

Arsene Wenger has primarily used Arshavin on the wing, even though some believe that the little Russian is more effective playing centrally. Arshavin had struggled at times and seems to want to shift inside when Wenger does play him on the wing. The frustrated Arshavin revealed that no one ever questions Wenger at Arsenal (from The Sun):

“When you have a mundane, domestic problem, he’s always very supportive. But when it comes to Arsenal, no one would dare approach him with questions about football or suggestions to change something round. Everyone knows what the answer would be.”

Many Gooners, including myself, will not find it surprising to hear that Wenger is completely in charge at the Emirates. Some have said that Wenger has possessed too much power at our club since the departure of David Dein. This issue usually relates to the transfer policy. When it comes to tactics, the manager should have the ultimate power.

Arshavin also expressed dissatisfaction over his limited time on the pitch: “It is better to play all the time like I did at Zenit rather than sit on the bench. I still want to play. If you are a footballer you want to be on the pitch — whether you are 18 or 35.

“Sometimes I go out on the field and know, however well I’ve played, I will be replaced after 70 minutes. And sometimes you sit on the bench in full confidence you will be brought on in the 65th minute.”

It is understandable that Arshavin is annoyed with sitting on the bench, but he only has himself to blame. The little Russian has been mediocre for the vast majority of this season. Only his performance against Bolton in the Carling Cup was impressive. If Arshavin regains his top form, he will certainly factor into Wenger’s starting eleven more often.

Despite his evident chagrin, Arshavin does not want a move out of North London: “If my situation does not change, I may look at it — but not right now. But it is clear the salary is important.”

Rumours point to a return to Russia, but Arshavin cares more about cash than location: “I met a man in Miami who said there is no difference where you live — it is important how much money is on your credit card. I think this is correct — if you have enough money, you can provide for your family anywhere in the world.”

At this point, our record transfer signing looks like a bust. We paid £15 million to Zenit for Arshavin, and, while he has had some fantastic moments, he has failed overall. Too many giveaways, too lazy, and too many fouls (when he actually attempts a tackle).

With that said, I still hope he comes good in the next couple of months. The little Russian has a lot of talent, but he is already 30-years old. Anzhi Makhachkala have been linked with Arshavin. It very well may be time for Wenger to cash in come January.

Arshavin to stay at Arsenal; worried about exits

Andrey Arshavin is “sure” that he will stay at Arsenal this season. The Russian said that losing Cesc Fabregas or Samir Nasri would be “enormous.”

Andrey Arshavin told Sport Express in Russia:

”I have already said that this season I am sure to be at Arsenal, and not somewhere else. If I ever return to Russia, then the priority option for me will be Zenit – but no-one can predict what will happen to you in the future, in a few years or even a season. As the saying goes: if you want to make God laugh – tell him about your plans for tomorrow.”

First off, Arshavin is quite a character, and we need more character in our side. He seems like the kind of guy who can loosen up a squad.

It is good to see that Arshavin will be staying with the Gunners. He is a top-quality winger when is his in good form. The problem is his consistency. Too often the little Russian falls off the pace of the match.

Andrey played an important role in last season’s finest moment. He scored the winner over Barcelona at the Emirates in the first leg of the Champions League knockout phase. Arsenal went down in the first half, but came roaring back in the second half with goals from RVP and Arshavin.

Arshavin provides depth off the bench for Wenger. If Arsenal are down a goal, Wenger can bring Arshavin on for a defensive player. When the little Russian is on his game, he can be a real goal threat.

Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri are likely to leave Arsenal. Arshavin talked about the situation:

”The policy of our club [next season] is the same, but it is difficult to say anything specific now, not least from the fact that two leading players, Cesc and Samir, have not decided their future.

”The loss of any one of them would be enormous, and we naturally want to see Cesc and Samir play with us in the future – but if the player wants to leave the club… It is hard to say [whether they will stay].”

Losing either player is not enormous. Arsene Wenger dug Cesc Fabregas out of Barcelona because he recgonized his talent. Who says he cannot do the same? Wenger should chose to replace Fabregas from within the club. Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey are ready to take over the midfield.

Nasri was a more established player when Arsenal bought him from Marseille. Wenger could buy Juan Mata or Eden Hazard as a replacement. With the money Arsenal get for Nasri and Fabregas, Wenger should be able to make big moves.

New Arsenal Away Kit

30 June 2011: I have been meaning to address this topic.  I am sure many of you have already seen the new 125th Anniversary away kit, but if you have not:

What to say about this kit… it is sort of terrible.   I just do not understand why it was necessaryto use both the dark blue and light blue and separate them in this way.  Arsenal.com explained the reasoning:

“The front of the new away shirt is divided into two halves, one navy blue and one turquoise blue, inspired by the away kits worn by Arsenal teams from the past. The diagonal line represents the gnomon (the pointer) which casts the shadow on a sundial – to commemorate the original Dial Square sundial on the site of the Arsenal munitions factory in Woolwich, where the Club was founded in 1886.”

The most important thing about a kit is the looks.  This shirt may have a lot of history put into the design but that will not lead to higher sales.  Why couldn’t they just make the entire shirt one shade of blue?  Or maybe make the front light blue and back dark blue or vice-versa?

I certainly will not be purchasing this shirt but I am not all that into kits.  They cost a small fortune, and a new one is released every season.  In the business world, this may be considered a “rip-off.”  The Arsenal hierarchy is not to blame.  If people will buy new shirts every season, then a new kit will be released.

Now, I cannot wait for the reveal of the third kit.  Nothing like spending the hard-earned money on a shirt that is rarely used.

Andrey Arshavin is not a fan of the new kit: “Our guest [away] uniform next season will look like jockey’s clothes.”

The promotional video and photos caused a stirwith the media.  They point to the fact that Samir Nasri was involved in the shoot and Cesc was not.  Apparently, clubs use these photo shoots to foreshadow what players will be sold and which we stay.  I am not buying this explanation from the media.  Many unknown variables are still to be determined in these transfer dealings, and it is still very early.

Maybe I will warm up to this kit if Arsenal continue their stellar away from next season.  No one can argue with success, and if Arsenal win the league with this shirt on, it will be my favourite away kit in some time.

Match Report: West Brom 2 Arsenal 2

Arshavin sparked the team with his brilliant finish.

The Gunners were able to score two late goals in an effort to comeback from a two goal deficit. We were unable to get a winner in the final minutes but it was still a tremendous effort to comeback from two goals away from home. Of course our defending was apalling, but that is to be expected. If only the attack could have heated up earlier, maybe we could have come away with a win.

When Arsenal were still down by two goals in the first half, I planned on starting this post with a picture of Arsene Wenger and a caption about how he should be sacked. Then the comeback came and I felt that was not called for. This game should have been a win so we did underachieve, but it was nice to see the team fight back and equalize. Should Wenger be sacked because of the shocking defense?

The first half was an absouletly abysmal one for Arsenal. West Brom got an early goal off a corner. Steven Reid put the header past Almunia. It was a ball that a decent keeper may have gotten, but Almunia isn’t a decent keeper. He should have put two hands up to catch the football instead of just lazily waving an arm at it. It wasn’t the last mistake the pathetic keeper would make.

We had trouble finding chances and keeping possession in the first half. West Brom played well, as you would expect playing at home. We were trying to play our pass-and-move game but some of the players on the pitch aren’t good enough to play pass and move. Denilson cannot play pass-an-move. He is a terrible player and I hope I never see him in the red and white (or yellow) again.

We went into the half down a goal. The second half was where it got interesting. West Brom struck for another goal off a rubbish piece of keeping by Almunia. It was sort of remincesnt of the Szczesny-Koscielny debacle but this time the deadly combination was Almunia and Squillaci. Peter Odemwingie broke away from the defence but Squillaci raced back to defend him. Almunia also raced out to meet Odemwingie, and the striker sidestepped and then rolled the ball into the back of the net.

At that point, I was calling for Lehmann. Almunia can make some terrific saves but those saves are just a mirage. He really puts himself in bad positions and gets punished for it. If I was Wenger (if he is still managing in April), I would start Lehmann in the next match. Almunia has proved that he is worth nothing in front of net.

I thought the season was over. No way this team can comeback after showing such little resilince. It took a great finish from Andrei Arshavin to energize the Gunners in the 70th minute. The Russian played a little give-and-go with Chamakh before firing a beautiful strike into the far corner. It was a major uplift for the team.

Just eight minutes later, the Gunners equalized. It was a gritty goal but a goal nonetheless. Arshavin sent in a cross that the West Brom keeper, Scott Carson, misplayed. Bendtner tapped the ball back in front with his knee and RVP got just enough on the ball to carry it into the open goal. We were back and looking for more.

It would have been a great game to win. Nothing like coming back to win 3-2 but it was not to be. West Brom were outstanding and almost took the lead back late in the game. We had several chances to score but it just wouldn’t fall. I am still pleased with the team because of the effort they showed. We do not see that kind of effort all that often.

Dimitar Berbatov scored a late winner against Bolton to secure a win for United. So now we are five points off United with a game-in-hand. Certainly a manageable margin but definitely not ideal. I we would have lost, then I would say the title race is over but we are still right in the thick of it.

Check back either later today or tomorrow for the post-match reactions.

Match Report: Arsenal 2 Barcelona 1

What a football match! The Gunners fell behind in the first half, but came back to dominate Barcelona in the second half and secure the victory. Andrei Arshavin, who was brought in as a substitute, came away with the winner in the 83rd minute. The Emirates exploded in joy as Arsenal were able to finally beat Barcelona. Barca looked flustered after our first goal, and clearly rattle after the second one. The pressure is squarely on Barcelona for the second leg at Camp Nou.

The buildup to the match was astounding. Everyone excited for the start of the game, awaiting it all week (or month). The pace of the match was set right from kickoff. It was going to be a fast-paced match with many scoring opportunities. Back and forth action ensured as each side earned scoring chances. Arsenal did come out firing, with a number of chances in the opening minutes.

Alex Song was shown the yellow card on first first tackle of the match (8th minute). Song then continued to test the patience of match official Nicola Rizzoli throughout the first half. It was really frightening for us Gooners because it looked like Song would be sent off at any time. Thankfully, Alex stuck around long enough to be taken out of the match by Wenger.

Nasri played a big part in the winning goal

Robin van Persie was off in the first half. He did have a wonderful chance for a volley goal in the 7th minute. RVP let off a vicious shot but it was right at Victor Valdes. The Dutchman missed the target too much. Some of his shots sailed over the goal, not even bothering Valdes. RVP would make up for it later in the match with a superb goal.

Barca started to control the game after the quick start from the Gunners. Messi almost scored in the 15th minute, when his chip shot rolled wide. Their possession and constant prodding of the Arsenal back four lead to the first goal of the match. Lionel Messi slid the ball past the Arsenal defence and unleashed David Villa on goal. Villa is never going to miss a chance like that, and Szczesny had no chance… one-nil Barca.

So we went into the break down a goal, against the best team in the world. It didn’t look very promising, not at all. The Gunners burst out of the break with a purpose. They pushed Barca back and made them defend under pressure. For most of the half, we created chances but weren’t able to take them. Barca looked comfortable just sitting back and defending for the rest of the match.

But then it happened. Robin van Persie found the net when he had no business to score. Gael Clichy sent a brilliant ball to RVP, who stormed down the left with it. He then looked up for a split-second before firing a shot that snuck into the net at the near post. To be fair, Valdes was terrible out of position, but it was still an excellent finish by RVP.

Just a few minutes later (83rd minute), Wenger’s substitution paid off brilliantly. Arsene took off the defensive-minded Alex Song in favor of Andrei Arshavin when we were still down by a goal. Samir Nasri, coming off an injury, set up the goal beautifully. Nasri sprinted by the Barca back four on the right side. Nasri was wonderfully patient, holding the ball off until Arshavin made a wide-open run right into the penalty area.

Arshavin’s finish was first class. He took the shot on his first touch and the ball sailed into the goal. Euphoric screams of passion light up the Emirates as Arshavin pulled his shirt over his face. Two late goals stunned Barcelona. Teams don’t usually put up that kind of fight against them. They underestimated Arsenal’s ability to turn around a match and it cost them.

Arshavin almost coughed up the lead only minutes after he supplied the goal. In the last minute of regular time, a Barca cross floated towards the far post, directly towards Arshavin. All he had to do was head the ball out of the area, but instead he tried to play the ball back to Szczesny. Well, the lightning-fast Dani Alves caught up to the header before it came to Szczesny, but the Polish keeper sheilded the net well, forcing Alves into the corner.

Speaking of Szczesny, he is a real quality keeper. It is so nice to have a keeper who takes command of the ball, whether in the air or on the ground. He is so confident and he never hesitates. Arsene Wenger has found his keeper.

Another young lad who is really impressing me is Jack Wilshere. Even against the “best” side in the world, he shines. Wilshere has a lot of pace, and he’s capable of running past several players. He takes care of the ball, making careful passes to keep possession. Wilshere is clearly blossoming into a great footballer.

Now on to the post-match comments. Here’s RVP: ”Just to play our own game. In my opinion, and in our opinion, if you drop back too much they are so good they will in the end beat you by far.

“We had to beat them in their own style. We got a bit lucky but it was a fantastic win”

The captain ( and Barcelona-born) Cesc Fabregas: “They don’t lose many games. They are the best side in football’s history in my opinion. This is 180 minutes. It’s a nice victory. It will give confidence to the team but that’s all.”

Let’s let Arsene close this match report: ”It is one of the most exciting nights because it was against a special team. The game promised a lot and I think it fulfilled all the promises, it was an exceptional match between two special teams.

“I am proud with the mental strength we have shown because against Barcelona you are sometimes on the border of being exposed. We never gave up and that mental strength allowed us to win the tie.

“In the second half we were tighter in our marking, pushed much more in and played higher up. They dropped a little bit physically and we didn’t and that was in the end the difference.

“We scored two special goals, one an individual piece of skill from Robin van Persie and the other a collective build-up.

“I don’t know how big the chance is (of progressing to the quarter-finals). I am convinced of one thing, the team will give absolutely everything to achieve it.

“We will go there with belief. It is a big boost for the team to know we can beat a side like Barcelona. You could see we are different team mentally, we are now more mature.”

Arshavin Disappointed in His Form

Arshavin, presumably when he was in good form

QCK4KAW48XGC

Andrei Arshavin has not played up to his skill level in recent games (as I’ve clearly spelled out in some of my match reports).  Arshavin has admitted that his play needs to improve.  Here is the captain of the Russian national team:

“It’s true that, at the moment, I’m not happy with how I’m playing.

“I feel that I’m making mistakes that I shouldn’t be – not giving good passes and losing a lot of balls. It’s hard to give reasons but I am working hard to get back to my best and am confident it will come.

“It’s an unusual situation because I’m not used to being on the bench this much. Maybe I had one period like this back at Zenit St Petersburg but it was a bit shorter. I can’t complain when the team is doing this well, though – our recent form in the league has been excellent.”

Let’s hope Arshavin can regain his form because he is a really special player when he is at his best.  Although he doesn’t work as hard as some players, he can be a scoring threat from on the wing.  Arshavin lost his starting job to Theo Walcott, the speedy English winger.

Match Preview

Arsenal are playing Premier League bottom-feeders West Ham this Saturday at 17:30 GMT and are looking to bounce back from a rough week.  After the draw to Leeds in the F.A. Cup, the Gunners suffered a humiliating 1-0 defeat at the hands of nPower Championship club Ipswich Town.  Will Arsenal drop points in the league when they visit Upton Park?

West Ham has had a disappointing season to say the least.  In the past month, Manager Avram Grant has saved his job by losing only a single game in seven matches.  Big wins over Fulham and Wolverhampton have given the Hammers hope that they can avoid relegation.  West Ham also beat Birmingham in leg one of  their Carling Cup semifinal.  If Arsenal are able overcome the 1-0 goal differential (favoring Ipswich Town) then the two clubs could meet again in the final.

Even though the Hammers are sitting at the bottom of the table, the Gunners can not overlook West Ham.  Scott Parker has been dangerous in the midfield, scoring four goals so far this season.  Arsenal centre-backs will have to be on the lookout for the physical striker Carlton Cole, who has been nagged by injuries.  Wayne Bridge joined the squad on Tuesday, signing a loan deal from Manchester City.  Bridge will try and help captain Matthew Upson.

Arsenal have struggled to put the ball in the back of the new recently, causing me to have to yell hopelessly at the television.  Sometimes, it seems like they’d rather pass the ball around looking to get closer to the goal instead of letting one rib from around the 18 yard box.  It’s really very frustrating but I don’t think any thing’s going to be done about it because that’s Arsene’s system.  Sometimes it looks like he must train them to not take the distance shot.

Maybe he should practice running

I can’t blame the lack of scoring all on Wenger.  That would be ignorant.  Players whose job it is to put the ball in the goal just aren’t.  Andrei Arshavin has been in terrible form lately.  He doesn’t seem up to the pace of the match (either that or he just doesn’t feel like running).  Several times in the Ipswich match, the ball would make it to Arshavin in or around the 18 yard box and he would just fail to settle the ball.  I would be shocked if he gets a start tomorrow.

Theo Walcott has been very dangerous attacking the goal.  When he starts, he seems to find ways to get the ball between him and the keeper but he just fails at tucking it into the net.  He is a defender’s nightmare: quick, great ball control, and some fantastic moves.  The only think lacking in his last few games has been the ability to finish his chances.

Hopefully, Nasri will start in place of Arshavin and be in great form tomorrow.  He needs to be there to set up the striker (either Van Persie or Chamhakh).  Nasri has been our best and most consistent player this season.

This match is very important for Arsenal’s title chances.  If they lose, then they may start to fall out of contention for the top spot.  If they win, it will show how they can overcome two disappointing results (to championship clubs no less) and earn three points.  Arsenal need to show their toughness tomorrow and their backbone so maybe they can finally shed their image as a soft side.
