Gazidis: Arsenal don’t need Champions League

The Starting Line-up: Ivan Gazidis said on Thursday that Arsenal can “cope” and “compete” without participation in the UEFA Champions League. Aaron Ramsey finds relief in playing for Wales after the poor start to his Arsenal season. Robin van Persie said that he is unsure of his future (again).

Let’s start with the chief executive of our football club. Ivan Gazidis spoke at a football conference, and he said that Arsenal will be fine without the money generated from the Champions League (from ESPN):

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis

“We would rather qualify for it but we have a really sustainable model that can cope without it. Not just cope, but we can do well and compete. It would be very foolish to build a business model that relied on being in the Champions League for perpetuity and I don’t think any clubs do that and, if they do, then they probably aren’t being run as responsibly as they should be.”

You have to be an extremely positive Gooner to believe that we will finish in the top four this season. Obviously, Arsenal’s budget does not need that £26 million (amount Arsenal made from the UCL last season) to run the club. But the Champions League is symbolic to players and supporters. Top players want to play in the competition, and supporters know their club is at an elite level when they watch them on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Gazidis went on: “Every club has the temptation to think that money is the answer to issues and if we only spend just a little bit more, it would push us over the top of a curve’ and that is what drives the cycle of spending that you see in the game and that is not by any means always what is successful, actually.

“It is tempting to think that it is. It relieves pressure for a while but actually builds long-term pressure in other ways. We will continue to act with discipline to make sure we have got a good short-term and long-term future.”

In case you have not heard Ivan, the short-term future for Arsenal is not looking too bright. We sit at 15th in the table, and our manager has already conceded that we are not title contenders this season. Long-term, especially if Financial Fair Play works as planned, looks fantastic. The question will be whether the Gunners can revive themselves and the reputation of the club, because the football-power slope is slippery.

Aaron Ramsey feels more pressure at Arsenal than he does playing for his country. He is the Wales captain, but he said that the Gunners’ poor start has made life at the Emirates frustrating (from ESPN):

“It’s been a difficult time for my club. It’s been quite frustrating so far with the performances we’ve shown in the last few games. But hopefully that can turn around pretty quickly.”

“Absolutely (it is easier to play for Wales). Arsenal, at the moment, are under a lot of pressure and we haven’t produced the results that we know we are capable of doing; everybody is surprised by that.”

To me, this is an obvious answer. At the international level, you feel the pressure, pride, and passion of your fellow countrymen. No disrespect for Welsh Gooners, but they were never expected to qualify for Euro 2012. At Arsenal, the expectation is success, and, when success is nonexistent, there will be more criticism to go around.

Robin van Persie, when asked about his future, said he does not know if he will remain at the Emirates Stadium (quotes obtained from ESPN): “I do not know [what I will do], I cannot predict the future. Everybody makes his own history and only afterwards can you see how that went.”

Regarding a possible move to Manchester City, van Persie said: “I do not know. For one thing, as an indication, when I came to Arsenal we immediately beat City. But in recent years much has happened in England.

“Nevertheless, I think the Premier League is still the best league in the world, it gives me everything I want.”

These comments make me sick to my stomach. The Dutchman has refused to deny the rumours, and he even acknowledged the rise of City. Robin is determined to play in the Premier League, but I doubt that he will be at Arsenal too much longer.

International Arsenal: Van Persie, Park, Ramsey

Park Chu-young

Robin van Persie scored four for Holland. Park Chu-young had a hat-trick for South Korea. Aaron Ramsey scored the winner for Wales in their European qualifier. Theo Walcott played very well in England’s victory over Bulgaria.

Holland defeated San Marino by a score of 11-0, and RVP contributed four goals for the Dutch. His first tally came in the 7th minute. Van Persie controlled a beautiful cross and then calmly slid it past the San Marino keeper to open the scoring. The Dutchman’s second goal came after he tapped the ball into an open net in the 65th minute.

Van Persie hammered home his third of the match in the 68th minute. After a shot bounced off the keeper, RVP finished the job by scoring the 7th goal of the game. His last goal came after a brilliant string of passes in the 79th minute. Van Persie finished off the total football with a hard, low finish.

San Marino were humiliated in the match, and it was tough not to feel sorry for them. Van Persie went through a similar struggle when Arsenal lost 8-2 at Old Trafford. After the match, many jokers on Twitter compared the Gunners to San Marino.

New Gunner Park Chu-young helped South Korea pummel Lebanon 6-0 in a 2014 World Cup qualifier. Nine minutes in, Park opened the scoring with a fantastic volley. A long pass was floated towards Park, and the captain decided to pop it into the net before letting it drop. Hopefully, we see this kind of quality finishing from Park at Arsenal.

Park headed his next goal into the net in the 45th minute off a corner. He completed his hat-trick in the 67th minute with a nice low striker from inside the penalty area. Park scored three different goals on Friday: a volley, a header, and a straight shot. He clearly has the ability to score in any situation.

Aaron Ramsey led Wales to their first victory of Euro 2012 qualification. The Welsh captain scored the winning goal in the 2-1 win. Gareth Bale sent a low cross towards Ramsey, and the Gunner slid the ball past the Montenegro keeper.

Theo Walcott did not score, but he was a big part of the England attack as the Three Lions powered past Bulagria by a score of 3-0. Walcott is showing Fabio Capello that he deserved a place in the 2010 World Cup squad. After the match, Theo said (from The Sun):

“It was one of my better England performances for a long time. Certainly since my hat-trick in Croatia.

“My form for England has not been the same as my form for Arsenal but hopefully I am starting to get there. I am enjoying my football and I think it shows.”

On Tuesday, England will take on Wales at Wembley Stadium in another Euro 2012 qualifying match. It will be interesting to see how both Walcott and Ramsey perform in the contest.

Andrey Arshavin captained Russia on Friday as they edged past Macedonia by a score of 1-0. Arshavin made a darting run from inside his own half, and it led to a goal from Igor Semshov in the 41st minute.

Yossi Benayoun played the entire match for Israel as they fell to Greece by a score of 1-0.

Arsenal 1-0 Udinese: Walcott goal propels Gunners

Arsenal narrowly defeated Udinese in the first leg of the Champions League Play-off on Tuesday. Theo Walcott’s early goal was the only tally of the match. Arsene Wenger may face action from UEFA after he contacted the bench during the match.

Theo Walcott broke the tension at the Emirates early with a goal in the 4th minute. Aaron Ramsey made a run down the flank, and then curled a low cross into the box. Theo Walcott volleyed the ball into the net. It is was good finish from Theo, who looked dangerous the entire match.

Udinese were clearly not afraid to play at Ashburton Grove. They lived up to their billing as a free-flowing, counter-attacking side. Antonio Di Natale lofted beautiful chips into the box for his teammates, but the Italians were unable to convert. Pablo Armero, a quick wing back, was the best performer from Udinese, using his work-rate and pace to create a variety of chances.

Gervinho seems to be unable to cross or shoot without hitting the nearest defender. The Ivorian has great ball control and pace, but once he approaches the box, he either holds onto the ball for too long or smashes it into the closest opponent.

Udinese decided to play four in the back instead of three, which was customary for them last season. Their attack was fluid, particularly in the second period, and was fueled by a number of skilled wing players, like Armero, Mauricio Isla, and Giampiero Pinzi.

Arsene Wenger will again be subjected to the ire of UEFA. According to The Guardian, Wenger relayed messages to Pat Rice on the pitch through phone conversations. Arsene believed that he could use coach Boro Primorac to communicate with the bench. UEFA warned Wenger at half-time to stop the communications.

But Primorac continued to talk on his mobile phone, and UEFA likely found this suspicious. Pat Rice even began looking up to the stands for Wenger. Arsene refused to hold his usual post-match press conference, thinking that his suspension should apply to that as well. It was probably just a sly move to anger UEFA.

The papers today have come up with some of the most blatant Arsenal-bashing headlines to date. For example, The Sun are running an article titled “Steven Howard warns Arsene Wenger over has-Beans.” The general consenus in the press is that Arsenal are lucky to have won the match, and that they are in big trouble.

Arsenal suffered two injuries to their back four. Kieran Gibbs, on of the Gunner glass-men, was taken out at half-time due to a sore hamstring. His replacement in the match, Johan Djourou, succumbed to a hamstring injury and Carl Jenkinson was brought in for him in the 56th minute. Wenger may have a makeshift defence for the upcoming Liverpool match.

If Manchester United had edged Udinese by a score of 1-0, then all the pundits would be applauding their bravery, experience, and winning mentality. If we do it, then of course that is not nearly good enough If Arsenal ever narrowly beat a team, then the Wenger empire is ready to crumble.

In reality, Arsenal did not have their best performance, but considering the absences of Robin van Persie, Samir Nasri, and Jack Wilshere, it was not a terrible outcome. Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey understand the importance of a clean sheet in the first leg (told to Sky Sports).

Walcott: “Yeah of course, but the most important thing was a clean sheet and our defence was solid yet again, just like at the weekend.

“It’s nice to get the goal, but they’re a strong team and we’re going to find it difficult over there, but we believe if we play the same football we can get the right result.”

Ramsey: “I think it was important to keep a clean sheet tonight, but they were a good opposition, it was a difficult test for us, but we came through it and scored a goal.

“But it’s still far from over. We’re going over there with a game to go and hopefully we can finish the job off.”

Walcott also reiterated his desire to play as a central striker, saying “That (striker) is where I want to play this season…” He has done this in the past.

In fact, Walcott would have had a brace had Samir Handanovic not made a terrific save. In the 91st minute, Gervinho made a brilliant run around the Udinese defenders before finding Theo nestled in the penalty area. Walcott tried to curl it into the far post but Handanovic had it covered.

Arsenal got a decent result Tuesday night. They did not concede a goal, and are in the right position to finish off Udinese. The second leg in Italy will still be very tense and exciting, but the Gunners handled their business at home. Hopefully, with the addition of Robin van Persie and Jack Wilshere into the squad, Arsene Wenger squad can move onto the group stages.

Match Preview: Newcastle v Arsenal

RVP will be the Arsenal captain today.

Arsenal will be without three key players as they take on Newcastle at St James’ Park on the first day of the new Premier League season. Twitter outlaw Joey Barton may be in the starting eleven for Newcastle.

Arsene Wenger announced yesterday that Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas will miss the match. Both players are strongly linked with moves away from London. Nasri will sit out due to sickness, while Fabregas is not yet match-fit.

Jack Wilshere will be forced to miss the match due to a real, genuine ankle injury. Wilshere said on Twitter: “Gutted not to be playing tomorrow but wish all the lads the best of luck! We need a good start! #gooners.” Abou Diaby will also not feature in the match after undergoing ankle surgery.

On a positive note, Theo Walcott, Robin van Persie, Thomas Vermaelen, and Kieran Gibbs are expected to be on the pitch after injury concerns during the pre-season. Van Persie will captain the Arsenal squad tomorrow.

Newcastle, meanwhile, will be looking to revive the magic of their four goal comeback in this fixture last season. After selling Kevin Nolan and Jose Enrique, the Magpies will be starting the season with a distinctly French feel.

The new arrivals at Newcastle include Gabriel Obertan, Johan Cabaye, and Demba Ba. But the Toon summer has revolved around the Joey Barton saga. Barton has strongly criticized the club management on Twitter. The English midfielder was not pleased by the sale of Nolan.

According to reports, Joey Barton will play a part in Alan Pardew’s squad to play Arsenal.

Despite the constant transfer rumours circling his team, Arsene Wenger is focused on Newcastle: “I believe the best thing for us, one day before the season starts, is not to focus on the possible transfers.

“What we want today is to focus on the players who play tomorrow and not the players who do not play.”

Aaron Ramsey, who could be a key player for Arsenal this season, is optimistic about the upcoming season (telling Arsenal.com): “People are entitled to their own opinions but I think and the team thinks that we are more than capable of winning something this season.”

“We’re going to believe that we can and not listen to any of the negative comments that people are saying. We’re confident in what we can do and I’m sure we’ll show that this season.”

If the Gunners are not capable of winning the Emirates Cup, then what can they win?

On a serious note, Ramsey is showing maturity at his age (20). He knows that the media is spreading the idea that Arsenal will collapse this season. From the start, the tabloids have been using headlines to scare Gooners into buying papers.

Notice that I have only brought up last season’s 4-4 draw once in this preview. This is because no Arsenal supporter feels like reliving that dreadful match. In all likelihood, today’s match will not be as painful.

Enjoy your Arsenal football!

News and Notes: Kroenke, Ramsey, Bale

Stan Kroenke’s bid to buy Arsenal Football Club has been approved by the Premier League. Aaron Ramsey thinks Arsene Wenger needs to make some serious changes this summer. Gareth Bale is confident that Tottenham can finish above Arsenal next season, a bold statement to say the least.

American Stan Kroenke now officially owns 63% of our beloved Arsenal. The Premier League has made it official yesterday. However,  Alisher Usminov has not given up his dream of someday owning the club. Kroenke had this to say after becoming majority shareholder:

“As the controlling shareholder of Arsenal football club, it will always be our intention to do what’s necessary to assure success on the pitch, provide long-term stability and build on the accomplishments and history of the club.

“The club has funds to invest and will do so wisely. Our constant aim will be to compete for silverware and championships.

“Arsenal is not about one shareholder, one player or one fan. It’s a special institution and we look forward to celebrating that further during the 125th anniversary year of the club.”

Kroenke seems like the responsible owner of a club. He does not want to drive the club into debt by borrowing funds to buy the club (Glazers). Stan also is not the guy who will fire a manager a year after he won the double (Ibramovich). Do you think Kroenke can help bring silverware back to Arsenal?

Aaron Ramsey believes that it is finally time for Arsene to be a buyer in the transfer market: “I’m sure there will be changes like any other season but I expect Arsène will be active in the transfer market.

“There have already been a few names mentioned and I am sure there will be a few players in and out. Obviously we haven’t won anything for a long time. The pressure has grown and the fans have been quite vocal lately. But the spirit in the dressing room is the same as always. Everyone gets on with each other so there is nothing wrong with the team spirit. Hopefully we can go on and win a trophy next season.”

Notice how Ramsey said he “expects” Arsene will be active in the market. Players are now expecting Wenger to add talent to this side and improve it enough to compete for the top spot in the Premier League. Aaron wants to know there is a future of silverware for Arsenal, and I believe Arsene could reassure his players by bringing in several big names in key positions.

Gareth Bale thinks that Spurs can finish above us next season: “There’s no reason why we can’t finish above them.

“We have a great squad, great players who are still young and we are playing great football.

“If we keep progressing like we have done this year, maybe get a few more players in the squad, then there is no reason why not.”

Seeing as Spurs have not finished above us since the 1994-95 season, Bale may be overly optimistic. How does Bale expect to get a few more players in the lineup when Tottenham are competing in the Europa League. If Arsene can remedy our defensive weaknesses, then we will be challenging for the title.

Wilshere-Ramsey Report

The England-Wales match has just ended and the Three Lions have come out victorious by a score of 2-0. This Euro 2012 qualifier was special for us Gunners because we saw Jack Wilshere match up against Aaron Ramsey. Both started and played reasonably well. These two could be the future of our midfield. Ramsey was a first-time skipper for Wales. The 20 year-old is believed to be one of the future Welsh stars. In the end, England outclassed the sluggish Welsh defense.

Wilshere again started in the holding midfield role. There were some scary moments. Twice in the match, Wilshere was slow to get up after a tackle. He shook the knocks off though and continued. Wilshere is always involved in those hard tackles because he is all of the pitch and always wants the ball. It is his determination, along with his elusiveness, that makes him prone to the aggression of the opposition.

Aaron Ramsey played a bigger role in his team. He had to because Wales found it hard to muster an attack. He played well, though some of his passes were less than spot-on. Wenger should strongly consider starting him alongside Wilshere and ahead of Diaby and Denilson. Although I do not think Diaby has been all that bad, Denilson has been consistently poor.

So, that is about all I have to say. Neither player had a magnificent showing and neither played poorly. Both are still young and have plenty of room to grow their talents. Let’s hope they become Arsenal staples for years to come.
