Gervinho penalty miss leads to Zambia victory

It came down to penalties in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, and Gervinho clearly refused to take a spot-kick when Ivory Coast manager Francois Zahoui had requested him to step up. Finally, the Arsenal winger did take his turn as the 17th participant in the shoot-out and his strike was horribly wide. Stophira Sunzu won the African championship for Zambia on the next and final kick of the match.

I really don’t know what’s worse- refusing to take the penatly or wildly missing the penalty. Gervinho was one of the Ivory Coast’s most dangerous attacking players throughout the ninety minutes, yet he was one of the last players to step up to take on the pressure of converting a spot-kick. Apparently, even Gervinho is aware of his own inability to consistently finish chances.

Ironically, Kolo Toure, who went just before Gervinho, was the other Ivory Coast player to not convert his penalty. Thankfully for Kolo, Zambia’s Rainford Kalaba blew the opportunity to seal the win on the next kick. How did two players who have worn the red-and-white kit of Arsenal fail to perform in the dying moments of an international final?

However, Gunners weren’t the only ones to disappoint the supporters of Les Elephants. Gervinho won a penalty after making a darting run into Zambian box, but Drogba’s effort from the spot sailed high over the net. It’s the second time the Chelsea striker has missed a penalty in an Africa Cup of Nations final.

Even with the presence of Gervinho and former Gunners Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue on the side of the Ivory Coast, it’s difficult not to have your heart warmed by Zambia’s historic triumph.

In 1993, all but a couple members of the Zambian national side died in an aircraft disaster in Gabon on their way to a World Cup Qualifying match. The final on Sunday took place in a stadium not far from where the accident occurred.

Add to that the fact that a majority of Zambia’s players apply their trade in the Zambian league, and Hollywood script writers have a ready-made story for their next dramatic film. Up against players who have adorned some of the most famous kits of Europe, Zambia conquered the mighty Ivory Coast on their way to their first African title.

In spite of all the talk about handshakes and racism, football has again proven to be a highway for dreams and fairy tales.

International Arsenal: November Break

Many Gunners wore the shirt of their country during this international break. An incredible thirteen countries picked Arsenal players to represent them in the two-week Premier League hiatus.

Tomas Rosicky: The Arsenal midfielder (and Czech Republic skipper) lead his team past Montenegro to qualify for the Euro 2012 finals this summer. Rosicky made both goals in the 2-0 win in the Czech Republic on Friday. The second assist was a perfect free kick that found the head of Tomas Sivok. The Czechs advanced after securing a 1-0 victory on Tuesday night.

Ju Young Park: The South Korean captain continued his remarkable scoring record for his country on Friday night against UAE in a 2014 World Cup qualifying match . Park scored a very late winner in stoppage time. A good pass put Park behind the back four, and he executed a calm finish. After he scored the goal, the UAE keeper seemed to kick Park as he was about to celebrate.

Unfortunately, an accumulation of yellow cards forced Park to sit out South Korea’s match against Lebanon on Tuesday.

Theo Walcott: England defeated the world champions by a score of 1-0, and Theo was in the starting eleven. He was not really effective against Spain at Wembley, but none of the England attackers had much influence. Walcott played a part in England’s 1-0 victory over Sweden on Tuesday night. He made a notable run during the first half, and looked dangerous until he was subbed off in the 67th minute.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: The Ox played very well for the England Under-21s as they thrashed Iceland 5-0 on Thursday. I posted an article about that performance last week. Chamberlain also participated for the entire match as the Young Lions were defeated by Belgium 2-1 on Monday night.

The Ox can definitely strike a ball. A video from England Under-21 training emerged in the last few days showing a few stunning long shots from Chamberlain.

Per Mertesacker: Big Per and his German teammates held Holland to a clean sheet on Tuesday in a friendly match. Mertesacker played the entire match as Germany crushed the #1-ranked Dutch by a score of 3-0.

Thomas Vermaelen: The Verminator featured once for Belgium during the international break. Similar to Mertesacker, Vermaelen and Belgium refused to allow a goal against France on Tuesday.

Wojciech Szczesny: Szczesny started for Poland in their 2-0 loss to Italy on Friday. The first goal came off a wonder strike from Mario Balotelli. Maybe Szczesny should have saved it, but the shot had an insane dip to it. The second Italian goal went right through the legs of Szczesny. Needless to say, he did not have his best performance.

Lukasz Fabianski: Fabianski received a chance to play against Hungary on Tuesday, which could have been due to Szczesny’s poor outing in the previous match. Poland fared better in this game, beating Hungary by a score of 2-1.

Laurent Koscielny: Congratulations to Koscielny for winning his first cap for France against the USA on Tuesday. The French backline was solid as they held the USA to a clean sheet. The final score was a 1-0 French victory.

Johan Djourou: Another of our defenders helped his team to a clean sheet. Djourou played for Switzerland against Holland on Friday, and the Swiss earned a 0-0 draw against the top-ranked Dutch side.

Robin van Persie: As I wrote about on Monday, Bert van Marwijk made an agreement with Arsene Wenger to let van Persie travel back to London after Holland’s first match on Friday. Robin played the full ninety against Switzerland, but the famous Dutch attack was stymied by Johan Djourou and company.

Aaron Ramsey: The Arsenal midfielder captained Wales to a 4-1 triumph over Norway in a friendly match. Some Welsh fans voiced their discontent at Ramsey for his desire to play for Team GB at the 2012 Olympics, which the Welsh FA fear could put their independent football nation status with FIFA at risk.

Alex Song: On Saturday, Song played the full match for Cameroon as they defeated Sudan 3-1 in a friendly match.

Gervinho: The Arsenal winger contributed for the Ivory Coast in their 1-1 draw against South Africa.

Andrey Arshavin: The Russian captain played the entire 1-1 draw against Greece on Friday.

Francis Coquelin: Coquelin played two Under-21 matches for France during the two-week break.

International Arsenal: Park, Ramsey, The Ox, and more

Many Arsenal stars featured for their country during the international break. Ju-Young Park cannot stop scoring for South Korea. Aaron Ramsey helped Wales end their qualification run with two victories. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s hat-trick on Thursday proved that he is one of the top young English players.

Ju-Young Park scored two for South Korea in their 2-2 draw with Poland last Friday. The first was a powerful strike off of a low cross. Park completed his brace when a break put him one-on-one with the keeper. Park confidently slid the ball past the Polish keeper. Ironically, the Poland keeper was Arsenal teammate Lukasz Fabianski.

Park also scored for South Korea in their 2-1 win over United Arab Emirates on Tuesday.

Wales captain Aaron Ramsey converted on a penalty for his country on Friday in their 2-0 victory over Switzerland. Ramsey also featured in Tuesday’s 1-0 win against Slovakia. Despite their strong finish to their qualification campaign, Wales will not be competing in Euro 2012 this summer.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a lethal finisher. The Ox scored a hat-trick for the U-21 England team in their 3-0 win over Iceland. Chamberlain used his blistering pace to score the first goal. His second came after the Iceland keeper made a terrible mistake. The Ox maneuvered around three defenders before sticking the shot near post to complete his hat-trick.

Theo Walcott must be feeling the pressure. Not only is Chamberlain pushing for a spot in Arsene Wenger’s starting eleven; he may be entering Fabio Capello’s mind ahead of the European Championships.

Andrey Arshavin captained Russia as they sealed their qualification to Euro 2012. The little Russian assisted on a goal as his side bashed lowly Andorra by a score of 6-0 on Tuesday. Arshavin, ever-present in the Russian team, also played on Friday in the 1-0 victory over Slovakia.

Per Mertesacker has been holding his place in a strong German team. Per featured for the full 90 against Belgium and Turkey during this international break. Germany did not drop a point during the qualification process, and will be one of the favourites to win the European title this summer.

Robin van Persie also played 180 minutes this week for Holland. Holland, after losing to Spain in the World Cup final, will also look to go far in the European championships.

Marouane Chamakh helped Morocco qualify for the African Cup of Nations on Sunday. Chamakh’s header was the first goal in the 3-1 win for Morocco over Tanzania.

Gervinho assisted on a goal from former Gunner Kolo Toure that helped Ivory Coast qualify for the African Cup of Nations. Toure’s goal was the first for Ivory Coast, as they edged past Burundi by a score of 2-1.

Last but not least, Theo Walcott featured for England in the 2-2 draw against Montenegro. Walcott fed a delicious cross to Ashley Young for the first goal of the match. The Three Lions blew a two goal lead, thanks in part to hot-headed Red Devil who was shown the red card. England did successfully qualify for the tournament.

International Arsenal: Van Persie, Park, Ramsey

Park Chu-young

Robin van Persie scored four for Holland. Park Chu-young had a hat-trick for South Korea. Aaron Ramsey scored the winner for Wales in their European qualifier. Theo Walcott played very well in England’s victory over Bulgaria.

Holland defeated San Marino by a score of 11-0, and RVP contributed four goals for the Dutch. His first tally came in the 7th minute. Van Persie controlled a beautiful cross and then calmly slid it past the San Marino keeper to open the scoring. The Dutchman’s second goal came after he tapped the ball into an open net in the 65th minute.

Van Persie hammered home his third of the match in the 68th minute. After a shot bounced off the keeper, RVP finished the job by scoring the 7th goal of the game. His last goal came after a brilliant string of passes in the 79th minute. Van Persie finished off the total football with a hard, low finish.

San Marino were humiliated in the match, and it was tough not to feel sorry for them. Van Persie went through a similar struggle when Arsenal lost 8-2 at Old Trafford. After the match, many jokers on Twitter compared the Gunners to San Marino.

New Gunner Park Chu-young helped South Korea pummel Lebanon 6-0 in a 2014 World Cup qualifier. Nine minutes in, Park opened the scoring with a fantastic volley. A long pass was floated towards Park, and the captain decided to pop it into the net before letting it drop. Hopefully, we see this kind of quality finishing from Park at Arsenal.

Park headed his next goal into the net in the 45th minute off a corner. He completed his hat-trick in the 67th minute with a nice low striker from inside the penalty area. Park scored three different goals on Friday: a volley, a header, and a straight shot. He clearly has the ability to score in any situation.

Aaron Ramsey led Wales to their first victory of Euro 2012 qualification. The Welsh captain scored the winning goal in the 2-1 win. Gareth Bale sent a low cross towards Ramsey, and the Gunner slid the ball past the Montenegro keeper.

Theo Walcott did not score, but he was a big part of the England attack as the Three Lions powered past Bulagria by a score of 3-0. Walcott is showing Fabio Capello that he deserved a place in the 2010 World Cup squad. After the match, Theo said (from The Sun):

“It was one of my better England performances for a long time. Certainly since my hat-trick in Croatia.

“My form for England has not been the same as my form for Arsenal but hopefully I am starting to get there. I am enjoying my football and I think it shows.”

On Tuesday, England will take on Wales at Wembley Stadium in another Euro 2012 qualifying match. It will be interesting to see how both Walcott and Ramsey perform in the contest.

Andrey Arshavin captained Russia on Friday as they edged past Macedonia by a score of 1-0. Arshavin made a darting run from inside his own half, and it led to a goal from Igor Semshov in the 41st minute.

Yossi Benayoun played the entire match for Israel as they fell to Greece by a score of 1-0.
