Arsenal fans conflicted ahead of Champions League final

Bayern Munich or Chelsea? Which club should Arsenal supporters cheer for in the Champions League final on Saturday night?

The Case for Bayern Munich

If Chelsea are victorious at the Allianz Arena, they will become the first club from London to be crowned European champions. As the most successful London club in the history of English football, Arsenal should hold that distinction. In addition, Ashley Cole plays for Chelsea, and we don’t like him.

Can you imagine what the Blues’ fans will be saying if they win the Champions League this season? Roberto Di Matteo has already led Chelsea to FA Cup glory, and now he has the opportunity to capture the European cup. Even though we finished far ahead of Chelsea in the Premier League, we will never hear the end of it from their fans if the Blues win two competitions this year.

In contrast to Chelsea, Bayern Munich are a well-run football club. Like most Bundesliga clubs, Bayern are not treading on thin ice financially. I would have no problem supporting Bayern Munich on Saturday. It would be amazing to watch them win the Champions League at their home ground. Conversely, no Gunners’ fan can particularly enjoy applauding for Chelsea.

 The Case for Chelsea

Jack Wilshere recently posted a message on Twitter saying: “Every Gooner will be a Chelsea fan next week…” Not quite every Gooner, Jack, but certainly a significant portion of the Arsenal family.

If the Blues beat Bayern, Tottenham will be bumped out of an Champions League slot. By rule, the defending European champions are granted a spot in the following season’s tournament. Chelsea finished sixth in the league, so a victory on Saturday will crush the hearts of all of the Spurs’ fans.

Without the attraction of Champions League football, Tottenham may have to let go of some of their top players. Surely, Gareth Bale and Luka Modric will be swayed by offers from Europe’s elite clubs. A crisis could ensue at White Hart Lane, which could be reassuring as well as amusing for Arsenal supporters.

Verdict

Perhaps the best way to handle our conflicted emotions is to simply enjoy the spectacle. Saturday is set up to be a fine day of football; the Championship play-off final between Blackpool and West Ham will serve as an appetiser for the Champions League final. We can debate all day the positives and negatives of supporting either Bayern Munich or Chelsea. Whatever you decide to do, please remember to enjoy a fantastic weekend of football!

Van Persie contract negotiations stall

The big meeting on Wednesday did not go well for Arsenal, as reports suggest that Robin van Persie wants to assess his options before considering any contract to stay at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners had wanted to sign the Dutchman to a new contract before Euro 2012, but that is now very unlikely. According to The Guardian, van Persie has “no intention” of accepting Arsenal’s proposed deal until he is able to review finalised offers from other clubs. With RVP currently training at the Holland camp, it appears as if this transfer drama will stretch out past Euro 2012 and late into the summer.

Manchester City and Juventus are the two favourites to land van Persie if he leaves North London. Both clubs firmly believe that the Dutchman has already decided to leave Arsenal, though the Gunners are still hopeful that they can convince van Persie to stay. Another outcome could see Arsene Wenger hold on to van Persie through the final year of his contract. Wenger has previously said that he would be willing to risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.

I am of the opinion that it is useless to employ a player who wants to go. If the Gunners cannot hammer out a deal with van Persie, then he should be sold. Imagine a scenario in which we do retain Robin for the final season of his contract. If he is adamant on leaving, then surely he will not give all of his heart for the red and white. In addition, van Persie could suffer through an injury-riddled campaign next season, and we could end up gaining no value for his departure next summer. Holding onto van Persie until his contract expires is not a smart football or business decision.

Patrick Vieira is also worried about how Arsenal will handle the Robin van Persie situation in the coming months. Though he currently works at Manchester City, Vieira is obviously knowledgeable about the way the Gunners operate. On Thursday, Vieira said:

“I think losing Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas last year was a big shock for the people who love Arsenal. If they lose Van Persie it will be a drama. With Samir and Cesc you could say, ‘OK those two are gone, but there is Jack Wilshere and Van Persie still at the club’. But if Robin leaves who is behind? If he leaves it’s going to be difficult for Arsenal to keep the top players, next year it may be Theo Walcott, then Jack Wilshere. But if they keep Robin they’re going to send a positive message to all the clubs and to all the people around. It’s really important to keep him.

“I’m quite surprised his contract (which is entering its last year) has got to this stage. It’s really difficult to find players of the quality of Robin Van Persie with one year left around the world and there will be a lot of teams who will want a player like him, not just Manchester City [who Vieira now works for]. They should have settled this a long time ago, but Arsenal don’t need me to tell them that. That’s the way it is and they will have to deal with it. There’s still a year, he’s not gone yet.

“Robin wants to win trophies. Arsenal have to show him he can do it with Arsenal. The best way for them to get him to sign a contract is to bring players to the club who can show him that the club are in the same line as him.

“We know how Robin loves Arsenal, that’s not the question; the question is how Arsene Wenger will convince Robin they can win trophies.

“Arsenal has qualified for the Champions League again but it’s not enough. I’m sure that if you ask Arsene he’ll say, ‘of course it’s not enough’. All the people at the football club will tell you it’s not enough.

“They’ve been quite close [to winning trophies] for quite a long time. They’ve got a lot of young players so over the years they can get experience and they’re going to be better players. The first step is to keep all the quality players and the talent.” (Source: The Independent)

Vieira’s anaylsis is interesting; however, it is not totally correct. If Arsene Wenger and his players were able to overcome the loss of their three top midfielders (Cesc and Na$ri left and Wilshere was injured for the entire season), then why can’t they handle the departure of van Persie? Time after time, Arsene Wenger has had to deal with a depleted squad, yet his teams always seem to avoid a total collapse. Arsenal existed before Robin van Persie, and they will surely exist without him if he decides to leave.

Arsenal set for negotiations with Robin van Persie

Robin van Persie will meet with Arsene Wenger and Ivan Gazidis on Wednesday. The Gunners hope they can convince van Persie to stay at the Emirates Stadium by offering a record-breaking contract and explaining Wenger’s vision for the club. If Arsenal are unable to hook the Dutchman, Manchester City will be ready to pounce.

According to the BBC, van Persie, Gazidis, and Wenger will rendezvous at Wenger’s house on Wednesday at approximately 10:30 BST. At the meeting, Gazidis and Wenger hope to induce van Persie into signing a new Arsenal contract, though a deal is unlikely to be finalised before the Dutchman departs England for Euro 2012 training.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph have reported that van Persie will be offered a £130,000 per week contract for either three or four years. Also included in the deal will be a £5 million signing-on fee. If RVP accepts the proposal, he would become the highest-paid player in Arsenal’s illustrious history.

Arsene Wenger is expected to attempt to entice van Persie by painting a picture of Arsenal’s future. The French manager will declare Arsenal’s dream of capturing major silverware in the coming years. While that may seem laughable to some Arsenal critics, Wenger and Gazidis will discuss potential transfer activity to provide evidence for their vision. Apparently, van Persie fully endorsed the signing of Lukas Podolski.

In any event, Arsene Wenger and Ivan Gazidis will try their best to impress van Persie. However, if their plan fails, Manchester City—and a plethora of other top clubs—are prepared to strike. According to The Mirror, the new Premier League champions are willing to hand van Persie a £250,000 a week contract. Bearing in mind that the Dutch striker currently makes £90,000 per week, that would be a massive pay rise.

Yet the Gunners appeared determined not to let another player leave for Manchester City. Arsene Wenger has said previously that he would not sell van Persie to City, and reports have indicated that the Dutchman would not be keen on moving to an English club.

The season has just ended, and the drama surrounding van Persie’s future will continue unless a new contract is agreed to before the European Championship.

West Brom 2-3 Arsenal: Gunners take third

Arsene Wenger was “very proud” of his team after the Gunners sealed third place by defeating West Bromwich Albion 2-3 at The Hawthorns on Sunday. The crucial victory means that Arsenal have gained automatic qualification into the group stage of next season’s Champions League.

The final match of the campaign was as dramatic as Arsenal’s entire Premier League season. Yossi Benayoun, in possibly his last game in red and white, scored the opening goal by hunting down West Brom keeper Martin Fulop. The Israeli midfielder stole the ball away from Fulop, who was not aware that he was inside his penalty area, and easily rolled the ball into the empty net in the 4th minute. Hopefully, Benayoun finds success at his next destination if he leaves the Emirates Stadium

The Baggies answered quickly by way of a Shane Long strike. The pacy Irish striker found himself onside and alone with Wojciech Szczesny. A cool finish by Long evened the score at one, and the Gunners were back to square one.

Roy Hodgson’s side did not stop there. Graham Dorrans’s excellent volley beat Szczesny and granted West Brom the lead in the 15th minute. It was not surprising that Arsenal would need a comeback in the last match of the season to secure the third spot in the table. That’s just the kind of season it’s been.

Andre Santos, who got the start at left-back, replied with a tally of his own in the 30th minute. The Brazilian made a nice move prior to firing a shot that beat Fulop. Santos has managed to score three goals from the left-back position despite only having started 15 matches in all competitions this season.

At half-time, I was surprisingly confident. Even though we had a relatively poor showing in the first fourty-five, all we had to do was win one half of football and our place in the Champions League would be assured.

Last week, Laurent Koscielny told the media that this season belonged to Robin van Persie. However, it would be the French centre-back who would score the most important goal of the campaign. It wasn’t pretty. West Brom keeper Martin Fulop, who was terrible on Sunday, collided with one of his own defenders while in pursuit of a Robin van Persie corner. The ball deflected to Koscileny, and the Frenchman stabbed it into the gaping net.

The Baggies pushed for an equaliser, and they almost had their wish in the dying moments of the contest. Kieran Gibbs made a sliding tackle just as Peter Odemwingie was lining up a strike inside the Arsenal penalty area. The gravity of that challenge by Gibbs cannot be understated. If Odemwingie had scored, St. Totteringham’s Day would not have arrived this year.

Arsene Wenger intelligently decided to remove the attack-minded Andre Santos and insert the more reliable Gibbs. Considering the goal by Santos, Wenger played his cards perfectly.

Once the final whistle sounded, Arsenal supporters around the globe celebrated St. Totteringham’s Day. Spurs were victorious on Sunday as well, but it didn’t mean anything. All of the idiots sporting “Mind the Gap” shirts quietly retreated into their holes. At one point, Gunners’ fans even got #NorthLondonIsRed to trend worldwide on Twitter.

When asked how Arsenal’s recovery this season ranks among his achievements, Arsene Wenger said after the match:

“I am very proud of this season because we were not only tested on the football front – which as a Club we are used to – but on our mental solidity, unity and solidarity within. We were deeply tested, we did not show any weakness, kept united and in the end came back. It is a good lesson for everybody. At some stages everybody was wondering what we were doing.”

Understandably, Arsene Wenger was emotional following the win. During the game, the television cameras showed Wenger hugging the soon-to-be-retired Pat Rice on the bench. Sunday’s victory over the Baggies was Rice’s last match as assistant manager after spending 44 years at Arsenal. The Northern Irishman will be replaced by Steve Bould.

Rice’s final season was a memorable one—not for silverware or success—but because of the fight and spirit the Gunners displayed to triumph over so many adversities.

First, at the start of the season, Cesc Fabregas and Samir Na$ri (two of Arsene Wenger’s best players) departed. Faced with a depleted midfield, the hope for Arsenal was that Jack Wilshere would be able to assume some of the responsibilities. Sadly, the Englishman missed the entire season due to injury. Many Gunners missed significant portions of the season with various injuries, and there were several crises because of the lack of healthy players at certain positions. And then, of course, there was the nightmarish beginning of the season. The wounds still sting too profoundly to describe that dreadful run. Arsene Wenger’s team overcame that start to finish one spot higher in the table than last year.

Here’s to a memorable season of ups and downs. While there were no trophies, there was plenty of excitement and a happy ending. Thanks Arsenal!

Quick Preview: West Bromwich Albion v Arsenal

Robin van Persie said it best in his motivational article in today’s Sun: “So this is it. This is the day, this is the match that will define our season — the 90 minutes that will determine our future.”

Pat Rice says good-bye

Sunday’s match at the Hawthorns will be Pat Rice’s last game. Arsenal’s assistant manager will retire after serving Arsenal Football Club for 44 years in various roles. A legendary Gunner who began his professional career at Highbury in 1966, Rice was a fantastic right-back for many years. He was the skipper when Arsenal beat Manchester United in the 1979 FA Cup final. After Rice hung up his boots, he quickly returned to North London to coach Arsenal’s youth team before becoming the caretaker manager for a brief period in 1996. Upon Arsene Wenger’s arrival, Rice was made the assistant manger.

Arsene Wenger commented on Pat Rice’s contribution to Arsenal: “It’s difficult to measure. He’s just been tremendous. It’s a sad, sad, sad day. His life was linked with Arsenal and Arsenal have been privileged to have him as a player, a captain, a coach, and personally I’m very grateful for his contribution to my period here.” (Source: Belfast Telegraph)

Steve Bould will replace Rice as assistant manager.

Analyzing the possibilities

Come Sunday evening, Arsenal will sit in either third, fourth, or fifth in the table. Each outcome has dramatically different results. If the Gunners are victorious over West Brom or Newcastle and Spurs squander their chances yet again, Arsene Wenger’s side will secure automatic qualification into next season’s Champions League. Finishing third is ideal is so many ways, ranging from keeping Robin van Persie to not having to worry about an extra couple of early season matches.

A loss or a draw on Sunday and the Gunners could face several difficult circumstances. A fourth finish would not even guarantee an appearance in next season’s Champions League, as Chelsea could win the European Cup and take England’s last spot in the competition. If we do land in fourth, we will have to become huge Bayern Munich supporters.

If the worst case scenario occurs, Arsenal will be defeated by the Baggies and end the campaign in the dreadful fifth place in the table. No Champions League could mean no more Robin van Persie and no big signings in the summer. It would be devastating.

Final day to determine fate

Thankfully, Arsenal’s final destination will be decided by their performance against West Bromwich Albion. Only in the case of a lose or a draw will Arsenal supporters need to check the results of other clubs. Of course, it sounds simple; all the Gunners need to do beat a team with nothing to play for. However, when Arsenal’s recent form is considered, the task begins to look a tad more difficult.

Arsene Wenger’s side are without a win in their last four contests, and Roy Hodgson’s team are without a loss in their last four matches. Gulp. Third would have already been sown up had Arsenal been able defeat Wigan Athletic, Stoke City, or Norwich City in recent weeks. The journey by the Gunners back to the upper portion of the table has been amazing, but perhaps the hardest part is finishing the job.

Robin van Persie knows a bit about finishing. The Dutchman has scored 30 goals in the league this season, just one shy of the Premier League record. Of course, van Persie has already collected his PFA Players’ Player of the Year award and his Fooball Writers’ Player of the Year award. Yet he would sacrifice all of his personal achievements for a victory on Sunday:

“All the goals I have scored this season, all the awards I have won — I would trade them all in an instant for us to win today.” (Source: The Sun)

Van Persie ended his rallying cry in The Sun by writing: “This is it — 90 minutes to seal our fate. We must deliver.”

Go on and do it!

Laurent Koscielny: We doubted Wenger

In a revealing conversation with France Football, Laurent Koscielny said that the Gunners doubted everything and everyone—even Arsene Wenger—after they began they season so terribly.

Real information regarding the attitude in the Arsenal dressing room is sparse. Players rarely, if ever, give interviews with outside media sources. That is why Laurent Koscielny’s comments, which appeared in Thursday’s edition of France Football, are so intriguing:

“The start of the season was catastrophic. We lost key players from our system. There was late recruitment of new players and the mayonnaise needed time to ‘take’.

“There was the thrashing at Old Trafford. The whole world buried us. But you don’t lose your football like that.

“It can happen that a small grain of sand jams the engine and after that you start to doubt your own qualities, the club, the coach and everything else. We needed to sort that out. Everyone got down to doing just that, the coach, the club.

“The group was not giving enough for the club and we realised that. We got down to work and we said the things we needed to say. After that, one win, two wins, confidence returns and things follow on from that. The new players were immersed in the group and so on.”

Koscielny is definitely one of the most improved players in Arsene Wenger’s squad, if not the Premier League. The French centre-back has come a long way from that gaffe involving Wojciech Szczesny at Wembley Stadium. In fact, Koscielny may now be the best centre-half on the team. While Thomas Vermaelen scores more goals, he also makes more defensive mistakes, such as slipping to the ground at key times

Koscielny’s insights are interesting because they show how low the club really was only several months ago; everything seemed to be lost. The scribes who wrote that Arsenal players have no heart or passion or leadership ability were wrong (and they were only saying that because they dislike Arsene Wenger’s foreigners). Having lost two very talented footballers right at the start of the season, the Gunners have battled back and performed admirably since. However, the job must be completed on Sunday by beating West Brom and securing the third place in the table.

No thanks! Van Persie won’t go to Juventus

Optimism is in the air at the Emirates Stadium as reports indicate that Robin van Persie will reject any offer from Juventus. However, Barcelona and Real Madrid still remain the primary choices for the Dutchman if he leaves Arsenal.

According to The Guardian, Robin van Persie is not interested in a move to a Seria A club. This is significant because new Italian champions Juventus have already publicly expressed their wish to sign the Dutchman. The general director of Juventus, Giuseppe Marotta, said:

“Van Persie is a great player. He is a complete player and would be useful to any team. But he still has one year left on his contract with Arsenal. We will try to put the icing on the cake this summer but the important thing is that the mix is good.” (Source: calciomercato.com)

Barcelona and Real Madrid are the main contenders in the battle for Robin van Persie. Still, Arsenal have the advantage because van Persie’s contract does not expire until the end of next season. As we have posted about previously, Arsenal will meet with van Persie and his representatives before the start of Euro 2012. If the Spanish giants have any hope of prying the Dutchman away from North London, they will need to submit a massive bid. Dominic Fifield of The Guardian is reporting that Arsene Wenger is under no pressure from the board to sell van Persie, and Wenger has said in the past that he would consider holding onto the Dutchman for the last year of his contract.

According to The Daily Mail, Robin has told friends and family that only an “extraordinary offer” from one of European football’s superpowers could force him to leave Arsenal. The Dutchman and his family are very happy and settled in London; the van Persie family has just moved into a new house.

The meeting between the Dutchman and Arsenal, which is expected to occur shortly after the season concludes, may decide whether van Persie stays at the Emirates Stadium. According to The Mirror, the Gunners will probably offer a £5 million signing-on fee to van Persie. In addition, any potential new contract awarded to RVP will break Arsenal’s current wage structure according to The Guardian.

If all of this information is to be believed and combined, the chance of van Persie leaving appears to be slim. Of course, as Gooners, we should realise that everything can change suddenly once a huge bid comes in from Real Madrid or Barcelona. Still, it’s nice that there is a feeling of hopefulness surrounding an Arsenal transfer saga for once.

M’Vila close to Arsenal move

According to multiple sources, Arsenal are close to signing Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila. The potential transfer may hinge on whether the Gunners secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.

The Sun, The Daily Mail, and The Mirror are all reporting that Arsenal are seriously pursuing Yann M’Vila. Arsenal would need to pay around £17 million to bring M’Vila to the Emirates. The 21-year old holding midfielder from Rennes is regarded highly because of his strong defensive play.

Frederic Antonetti, manager of Rennes, once said about his young star: “He reads the game like Claude Makelele, has the presence of Patrick Vieira and can pass the ball like Yaya Toure.” (Source: FIFA.com)

Arsenal are clearly trying to complete their transfer dealings quickly and early. The signing of Lukas Podolski has already been confirmed, and reports now indicate that the Gunners are very interested in Yann M’Vila, Clint Dempsey, Jan Vertonghen, Junior Hoilett, and others. All of the names listed present the possibility of promising squad improvement heading into next season.

Any move could depend on Arsenal’s participation in the Champions League, which is why it is so vital that Arsene Wenger’s side finish third in the table. If the Gunners assure automatic qualification to the group stage, then the transfer business will be able to be dealt with early. If they finish fourth, deals may be halted due to the uncertainty of a difficult qualifying round opponent, like Arsenal had this season in Udinese. If Arsenal do not make it into the tournament at all, transfer targets will look elsewhere.

Needless to say, Arsenal’s final game of the season against West Bromwich on Sunday is vital.

Arsenal unveil new home kit for 2012/13

Pictures of Arsenal’s new home kit for the 2012/13 season have been officially revealed. The main difference from this year’s shirt is the sleeves, which are red, white, and dark blue.

Click here to view a several images of the Gunners’ new home kit.

“The playing kit features a blue hoop detail inspired by the home kit socks worn in the 1930s under legendary manager Herbert Chapman.

“As is traditional with the north London club, the world renowned red and white is the main colour way in the shirt, with a block red body and white sleeves.

“Further details in the shirt include the outer back neck graphic which references the WM formation that Chapman pioneered so successfully, along with the inner back graphic which reads “Victoria, Concordia, Crescit” – the Club’s long-held motto since 1948 which translates as Victory through Harmony.” (Source: Arsenal.com)

Could it be possible that Nike designs the kits and then justifies the changes with historical references later? If they wanted to honour the socks worn by the Gunners in the 1930s, then why not just put the blue hoop on the socks and not the shirt? All in all, I don’t like the new home shirt, especially those idiotic sleeves.

On a side note, the sleeves resemble Dutch flags. Perhaps the club is trying to send a subliminal message to Robin van Persie. If you look at the sleeves from a different angle, they mirror the colours of France. Of course, Arsene Wenger needed to have that little touch included in the new shirt.

The 125th anniversary crest was only commissioned for the current campaign, so the crest will revert back to the usual, most recent edition.

I must confess; I do not plan to purchase this new home shirt. The design is nontraditional and unattractive. However, I may reconsider if we win some silverware next season. In fact, if we win the league, it will become one of my new favourites.

Arsenal 3-3 Norwich City: Lucky Gunners remain in third

The Arsenal world was drenched in disappointment on Saturday afternoon following the Gunners 3-3 draw with the Canaries. Remarkably, the results went Arsenal’s way on Sunday, and Arsene Wenger’s side held on to the third spot after an insane weekend of football. Here are my main talking points from the thrilling affair at the Emirates Stadium.

  • Terrible performance overall: On the whole, the Gunners were dreadful on Saturday. The back four could not contain Grant Holt at all. Aaron Ramsey and Alex Song continually gave the possession away in the midfield. Wojciech Szczesny was as reliable as a sundial at midnight. Robin van Persie managed to score two goals even though he was in solitary confinement until the latter part of the second half. It was a shocking performance given the importance of the game.
  • Ruddy, Ruddy everywhere: The Norwich keeper erected a sturdy brick wall to stop Arsenal’s late barrage. Without John Ruddy’s excellent showing, the Canaries would have surely conceded another goal or more likely two. His save on Kieran Gibbs’ effort in the dying seconds was particularly stunning. Ruddy was in my dreams on Saturday night, repeatedly blocking all that came his way, so I can only imagine how the Arsenal players must have felt.
  • Still no home penalty: Arsenal have completed all of their home fixtures in the Premier League this season without getting penalty. The infamous streak was capped on Saturday at Ashburton Grove when referee Anthony Taylor was silent as Robin van Persie was tripped up from behind in the 89th minute. A  penalty decision could never be more clear, yet Taylor just swallowed his whistle in fright. Arsene Wenger was frustrated after the match: ”Here the whole season we have got zero penalties. It is absolutely amazing, because you see other clubs who have got 10. I don’t know (why the penalty was not given), we have to accept the decision of the referee.” (Source: ESPN)
  • Ramsey nightmare: Aaron Ramsey had yet another hellish day. Maybe Arsene Wenger should consider dropping the Welshman completely. The Arsenal manager did withdraw Ramsey from the contest in the 63rd minute, though it was 63 minutes too late. For whatever reason, Ramsey has been helpless in the midfield recently, so perhaps it will serve the interests of our football club to sit him on the bench for the final, crucial match of the season next week.
  • Poor Sagna: Bacary Sagna’s suffered his second broken leg of the season against the Canaries on Saturday. Arsene Wenger confirmed post-match that the French right-back fractured his right fibula; it is the same injury he sustained against Spurs several months ago. Regarding the injury, Sagna told L’Equipe: ”I think he (Norwich’s Bradley Johnson) did it on purpose. He stepped on my leg. Play continues, I get back on my feet. And when I tried to control the ball, I felt a crack, just like the first time at Tottenham. He stepped right where the plate was. I think the plate pressured [the bone]. It’s a neat break, just above the plate.”

Doom and gloom took up their usual positions following the disheartening and dramatic 3-3 result at the Emirates Stadium. Arsene Wenger’s team had just sacrificed their ability to control their destiny. Then, all of the sudden, our rivals choked on the meal we had handed them on a sliver platter. Tottenham and Newcastle both dropped points on Sunday. Our chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League remain high. A point against West Bromwich next week and we are guaranteed to finish no lower than fourth; a victory over the Baggies and we lock up third. At least we can rest assured that our fate will be determined by our performance and our performance alone. Judging by the performance on Saturday,  we really should be worried.
